Denison High School’s multi-talented Color Guard returned last week from Regional competition at Liberty High School in Frisco with a host of trophies and awards that earned the group a coveted "Best in Class" plaque and another trip to Nationals.

"The girls took a total of eight performances to Regional competition and brought home eight trophies as well as the Best in Class plaque," said Color Guard Director Mary Creech. "All routines received a Superior Division 1 rating, which means we have advanced to the Marching Auxiliaries National Competition for the sixth year in a row. What a wonderful accomplishment!"

Creech said that the girls will be working hard on their routines between now and the State contest, scheduled for March 21-22 at the Fort Worth Convention Center. "These girls have worked incredibly hard, investing many hours of practice before, during and after school, to once again attain this high level of recognition. Several of them also participate in other extracurricular activities, and they also find time in their busy schedules to take part in local parades and other community events. They’re a great bunch of girls. I’m just so proud of each and every one of them."

Winners who will compete at Nationals include: Team Winter Guard – Carson Avery, Chandler Souther, Starla Boatner, Laura Rodriguez, Shianne Martin and Jessica House; Team Flag – Starla Boatner, Shianne Martin, Sierra Shepard, Diana Hernandez and Ashley Peck; Mixed Duet of Laura Rodriguez and Bethany Ridinger; Senior Duet of Carson Avery and Chandler Souther; Sophomore Duet of Starla Boatner and Shianne Martin. Three solo performances also qualified for Nationals: one in 9-10th grade Division – Laura Rodriguez; and two in the 11-12th grade Division – Carson Avery and Chandler Souther.
