The Sherman ISD Board of Trustees recognized staff members and the Sherman High School cheerleaders, and continued their search for a new head football coach at their regular meeting Monday.

The board gave recognition to several SISD staff members. The elementary school teacher of the month was Nicole Newbold, third grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary. The employee of the month was Joe Petruzelli, special education classroom assistant at Piner Middle School. The team of the month was the Fairview Elementary fine arts and P.E., which consists of music teacher Kerri Sturm, art teacher Allyson Talbott and P.E. teacher Mike Gillum.

Next, the board gave special recognition to the Sherman High School cheerleading program. The SHS Principal Peggy Van Marter introduced each of the cheerleaders and the mascot, and spoke of their accomplishments. At the camp the squad attended over the summer they received the "traditions award," which Van Marter said was awarded based on leadership and was a big honor. Furthermore, four members of the squad qualified to be "All-American" cheerleaders.

"I’d just like to say that this squad is one of the most talented squads that we’ve had here at Sherman High School," Van Marter said. "They’ve worked hard this year at pep rallies, football games. I think they’ve done a great job."

The Board held their executive session at the end of the meeting, during which they approved the resignation of one teacher and the retirement of three teachers. They also discussed the position of the Sherman ISD head football coach. The Board hopes to be able to hire a new head football coach in time to announce their decision at next month’s Board meeting, said Superintendent Al Hambrick.

"Tonight we are still giving consideration to the candidates who have applied for our head football position," Hambrick said. "We are considering a large pool of applicants. We certainly haven’t narrowed it down to one yet, or even a small pool yet."

The next Board of Trustees meeting will be held March 24. The Board wanted to clarify that, although they usually meet on the the third Monday of every month, they will be meeting on the fourth Monday in March to accommodate spring break.
