Bonham Independent School District Superintendent Marvin Beaty said that Bonham High School Principal Steve Hill is retiring after the fall semester.

The BISD Board has called a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to consider Beaty’s recommendation for interim principal of the high school.

Beaty said Hill has "almost 40 years in the business and the time is right for him to ride off into the sunset." Beaty said he will ask the Board to consider David Ketcher as the high school’s interim principal.

Ketcher, Beaty said, is a retired principal from Dallas and has been a personal friend of Beaty’s for 25 years. Beaty said he will ask the Board to consider a short-term contract with Ketcher that would make Ketcher the acting BHS principal until June of next year.

Ketcher’s proposed contract will leave room for the once-retired principal to continue as the head of BHS after June, if all parties find the arrangement agreeable, Beaty said.

He said Hill’s retirement was sudden but not entirely unexpected. Beaty said he appreciates Hill’s performance and that the 60-year-old principal has almost 40 years of experience as an educator and administrator.

If the trustees approve Ketcher as the interim principal, he would begin working half days at the high school immediately after the district’s Thanksgiving holiday, Beaty said. Ketcher would spend the other half of his first days working for the district inside the BISD Administration Center reviewing the district’s policies, procedures and curriculum.

The meeting is scheduled to take place in the Board room inside the Administration Center at 1005 Chestnut St.
