BELLS — Bells Mayor Gary Martin resigned unexpectedly Thursday.

Martin came to city hall with a paper announcing his resignation and turned in his keys and cell phone, said Councilman Kemal Tongate. Martin gave no reason for his resignation, which came as a surprise, Tongate said.

The Bells City Council will decide how to move forward at a special meeting Tuesday. The Council had already scheduled the meeting prior to Martin’s resignation. The Council will likely do one of three things, Tongate said: appoint Mayor Pro-Tem Angela LeBlanc as mayor, appoint another person as mayor or put the office of mayor on the upcoming election ballot.

Martin’s term was slated to end in 2015, so whoever becomes mayor will serve for one year, Tongate said.

Mayor Pro-Tem Angela LeBlanc will serve as interim mayor until the special meeting.
