GUNTER — The home team crammed a game’s worth of big plays into the first 12:48 of action and Gunter rode that fast start to a 49-7 victory against Whitewright in the District 7-2A (II) finale on Friday night.

Gunter blocked a punt, recovered a fumble, drove 99 yards, had a touchdown saving tackle inside the 1 on a 57-yard run, scored four times and got 96 yards on nine carries by Kevin Teems — all less than a minute into the second quarter.

"We’ve talked about wanting to peak at the right time," Gunter head coach Jake Fieszel said. "I just wanted to see us execute and we definitely did that tonight."

Gunter (8-2, 4-1) earned the second seed in the playoffs and will face Clarksville at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Princeton in a Class 2A Division II Region II match-up. Whitewright (2-8, 2-3), which finished fourth in the standings, takes on Cooper at Royse City at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

"Every one of our goals are right in front of us," Fieszel told his players following the game. "Our next goal is to practice on Thanksgiving Day."

Jefferson Ballard broke free on a quarterback sweep for 57 yards, but Gunter’s Rhett Taylor ran him down from behind just inches from reaching the ball inside the pylon. Whitewright couldn’t punch it in.

When Gunter responded with a 99-yard touchdown drive, the floodgates opened.

Austen Gressett was 6-of-6 for 142 yards and started the scoring with a four-yard pass to Spencer Lashley.

Teems scored on runs of 19 and 14 yards, Casen Driskell plunged in from a yard out and Seth Brewer and Lashley scored on the ground as Gunter opened a 42-0 half-time lead.

Taylor took the opening kickoff of the second half back 77 yards for a touchdown to finish the scoring for Gunter.

Ballard, who finished with 120 yards on 28 carries, scored on a three-yard run with 8:12 remaining in the game to help Whitewright avoid the shutout.
