A Denison man was arrested for murder on Sunday after police responded to an early morning shooting in the 800 block of West Monterey Street, which left another man dead.
In an emailed incident report, the Denison Police Department said Reynaldo Cruz, 45, was arrested for the alleged killing of Daniel Olvera Hernandez, 44, also of Denison. The report said officers responded to a residence in the area shortly after 2 a.m., upon receiving a report of a shooting victim and found Hernandez deceased from multiple gunshot wounds. Lt. Mike Eppler said, amid the ongoing investigation, he could not not comment on how Cruz and Hernandez knew one another, but said the two were engaged in a conflict prior to the alleged shooting.
“It was over a relationship,” Eppler said. “I really can’t be specific about it right now.”
Eppler said Hernandez was identified as a possible suspect during the initial investigation and a vehicle description was obtained and distributed to neighboring agencies. Eppler said Sherman Police located a vehicle matching the description at the Walmart in Sherman. Denison Police responded to the scene and took Cruz into custody.
Cruz was booked into the Grayson County Jail, where he remained on Monday on a $1 million bond. It was unclear whether Cruz had obtained an attorney.
Eppler said the case would be referred Monday to the Grayson County District Attorney’s Office.
