It takes a lot of courage to go through life not having the things one needs in order to be successful and the Denison Service League has spent 60 plus years trying to help those in need reach their goals.

On Saturday night, one of the dancers in the Service League’s annual Dancing with the Stars knew a little bit about overcoming obstacles.

Cayla Turner with Nautilus took the floor with her partner Cean Fitz and a heavily wrapped foot stuffed into her high heel shoe.

And she danced.

One of the judges commented that just before the competition started, Turner was walking around in a boot on that foot. And she danced.

Cathy Eubanks, co-chair of the Denison Service League Fundraising, said they were anticipating about 480 people to fill the Event Center at Hilton Garden Inn Saturday for sold out event.

“It’s always crazy at the end,” she said of the last minute ticket sales.

Eubanks said the organization counts on sponsors to fill their fundraising needs rather than auctions. She said they had one $5,000 sponsor, three $2,500 sponsors and ten $1,400 and many who sponsored at the $800 level.

In addition, she said the crowd really gets into the 50/50 raffle, there are some raffle baskets that they give out at the end of the evening.

She said the night is really all about the support they can give to the local organizations that help children in the area. Last year, she said, funds from the event went to the Boys and Girls Club of Denison, CASA of Grayson County, Child and Family Guidance Center, Children’s Advocacy Center of Grayson County, Crisis Center, Denison Helping Hands, Divine Equine Therapy Riding Center, Family Promise of Grayson County, Fred Douglas Early Learning Center, Grayson County Shelter, Habitat for Humanity of Grayson County, Jack and Jill Childcare Center, Kid’s Pantry, North Texas Youth Connection, Pathways High School, SHARE — Taking it To the Streets, True Options Pregnancy Center, Volunteer Services Council of Texoma and Women Rock.

Co-Chair Amber Pilcher, who works at Landmark Bank, said her employer places a priority on its staff working within their communities to make them a better place to live. And giving back is something all Service League members understand. Each member works throughout the year to support the causes championed by the league.
