Pottsboro Police say a man who was stopped for a traffic violation was taken to the hospital in critical condition after he shot himself during the stop.

“At approximately 1:30 p.m., Pottsboro Police attempted to stop a black Ford F-150 pickup truck,” Chief Shone Nix said in an emailed statement. “The driver turned onto Pat Lane and stopped. For an as yet undetermined reason, the driver of the pickup produced a handgun and shot himself.”

Nix declined to identify the man, citing the pending notification to family members. But Nix said the man was taken to Wilson N. Jones Regional Medical Center and was alive as of Wednesday evening.

The incident drew a large police presence, including deputies from the U.S. Marshals Service, Texas Department of Public Safety, and the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office.

Nix said the department would release additional information via email, as it became available.
