There are still a few more chances to take to the rink at Denison on Ice. The outdoor skating area on Main Street in Denison will be open until Tuesday.

On Saturday, area families took advantage of the cold weather and spent some time on the ice.

“We came last year and we had a grand time,” Allen Shaw said. “I have three children. One is 16; one is 9; and then, there is one in between.”

Shaw said he loves to take his children ice skating when he can. “But, there is never any opportunity around here,” he said. “So we like to go roller skating when we can. This place is just unique. When you get out there on the ice and you are using your muscles, you get to warm up.”

About 300 families, came to the rink daily during Denison on Ice’s one-month run. Vicky Scheier brought her husband, mom and two children to the rink.

“We did it last year and had loads of fun,” she said. “My niece is from Lubbock and they do not have anything like this there.

“I said, ‘Well how about we all go ice skating.’ This has been lots of fun.”

Denison on Ice Manager on Duty Zera Taylor said that about 23 children and eight adults visited the rink before 2 p.m. Saturday.

“The number of people that show up daily really has depended how cold it is,” she said. “We have had people today that said it was too cold and so they left early. And, when it is a little warmer, people have left because the ice has been a little wet.”

Taylor said that she has seen a lot of repeat customers.

“I think people have been enjoying this because it’s not something that we have in Texas,” she said. “Ponds do not freeze; lakes do not freeze. So this is just a different experience and it brings people downtown.”

Denison Main Street Director Donna Dow said she is proud of how well the ice rink has done this year.

“We have a team and we will review all of the data we have collected from this year after we close the rink,” Denison Main Street Director Donna Dow said. “We do not want to change up the rink and procedures at the rink too much, but if there are needed changes, we can make them. We want to make it more customer friendly each and every year.”

Having the Denison Public Library’s Santa’s workshop closer to the rink this year helped make the workshop more visible to patrons, Dow said.

“We want to enjoy the ice rink while it’s here,” she said. “It will be about another 11 months until it is back again so we just want everyone to get out and enjoy it now.”

The rink is located at 530 W. Main in Denison and is open from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. each day until it closes.
