A Sherman man was hospitalized Wednesday after losing control of his motorcycle as he attempted to evade Texas Department of Public Safety troopers.
Trooper Tarif Alkhatib said at approximately 3:45 p.m. troopers received a radio call that two motorcyclists were racing one another through Denison in the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 75. Alkhatib said a trooper initiated a traffic stop, but both motorcyclists fled in different directions.
“One them stayed south on 75 and the other took the (FM 691) exit.” Alkhatib said. “He came by me and I picked him up.”
The DPS trooper said he followed the 29-year-old along FM 691 and onto South Austin Street, when the man lost control of the motorcycle and left the roadway near the intersection with Knollwood Road. Alkhatib said the man was wearing a helmet and suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. He was transported by ambulance to Wilson N. Jones Regional Medical Center.
The trooper who initiated the traffic stop along U.S. 75 followed the motorcyclist who stayed south on the freeway. Alkhatib said the motorcyclist evaded the trooper and was not stopped.
Sherman Fire-Rescue crews also responded to the scene. Northbound traffic was temporarily halted as crews cleared the scene.
