Authorities are investigating reports of gunfire near South Sherman following reports by police department personnel. So far, no suspect has been found.

Lt. John Kennemer said two Sherman Police officers were training on a department gun range in the 2400 block S. East Street when they heard unexpected gunfire nearby. It was unclear whether any rounds landed near the two officers.

“We had two of our Special Response Team officers, specifically the counter snipers, on our range and practicing with their rifles,” Lt. John Kennemer said. “While they were shooting, they reported hearing gunshots from the east of them. At that point, they went to cover, called for backup.”

Kennemer said the neither of the officers were injured and did not return fire. Officers who responded to the backup call reported hearing “something or someone” run through the wooded area.

The Texas Department of public safety dispatched a helicopter to search for a suspect by air and Sherman PD deployed a canine unit to search the area. No suspect was found and the search was eventually called off so investigators could begin to examine the gun range and collect evidence.

Kennemer said the department will move forward with the criminal investigation.
