The votes have been counted and the winner announced for the first Battle of the Mascot contest. The winner, Billy Bob the Bearcat, garnered the most votes.

The Herald Democrat hosted the online-voting contest, which was sponsored by David Means Allstate and Texoma Country Pools and Spas.

“We’re proud to support such an important and exciting game as the Battle of the Ax and to give back to the boosters,” Herald Democrat Senior Group Publisher Nate Rodriguez said.

In addition to bragging rights for Bearcats fans, both Boosters clubs received a donation as a part of the contest.

“At David Means Allstate, we always look for ways to support our Yellow Jackets and what better way than being involved in one of the most storied rivalries in the great state of Texas,” Means said.

Both mascots showed off their moves in the pregame announcement, and Sherman Booster President Doug Holtzclaw and Denison school board member Brian Aspell were on hand to accept the donations.

Don Hicks with Texoma Country Pools and Spas said his business was excited about the opportunity to give back.

“We have always supported our Sherman High School,” Hicks said, “… when given the chance to be involved in the Battle of the Ax, we just couldn’t pass it up.”
