No one was injured after a small fire broke out inside an Austin College residence hall on Friday morning.
Sherman Fire-Rescue crews responded to Dean Hall, near the intersection of East Richard Street and North Grand Avenue, at approximately 8:45 a.m. after flames were observed inside one of the dormitory’s elevators and a fire alarm was triggered. It was unclear whether any students or staff were inside the elevator when the fire began.
“The fire was put out by Austin College personnel prior to our arrival,” Sherman Fire-Rescue Division Chief Danny Fuller said. “They did a good job of evacuating and accounting for students.”
Austin College Director of Public Affairs Lynn Womble said students remained outside as firefighters cleared the building and were allowed to return to their rooms at approximately 9:30 a.m.
Fuller said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
