For more than a century, the Denison Yellow Jackets and Sherman Bearcats have fought it out on the field in the annual Battle of the Ax. This year, fans can join in the fun with the Battle of the Mascot Contest, brought to you by the Herald Democrat, David Means Allstate and Texoma Country Pools and Spas.

“We're honored to be a part of this great legacy and have the opportunity to give back to both schools,” HD Senior Group Publisher Nate Rodriguez said.

Both teams' booster clubs will receive $250 from the sponsors of the contest. (Click here to vote.)

“We are a local, family-owned business and have been building custom in-ground pools for 20 years,” Don Hicks with Texoma Country Pools and Spas said. “We have always supported our Sherman High School in several areas including football, cheerleaders, choir and orchestra and when given the chance to be involved in the Battle of the Ax we just couldn't pass it up. We wanted to be a part of the excitement and help support this long-standing tradition. We plan on being here another 20 years to support our community and our customers with all their pool and spa needs.”

David Means, owner of David Means Allstate, offered similar thoughts.

“At David Means Allstate, we always look for ways to support our Yellow Jackets and what better way than being involved in one of the most storied rivalries in the great state of Texas,” he said. “Remember, even if mayhem arrives at Bearcat Stadium on Nov. 10, Allstate with be there with you.”

In addition to the proceeds for the booster clubs, voting participants will have a chance to win $100.

The winning school will be announced at the Battle of the Ax game on Nov. 10 and both booster clubs will be presented with the checks.

In addition to announcing the contest winner, the Herald Democrat will be hosting the Battle of the Ax Tailgating Experience in the 300-400 blocks of North Elm Street and the 200 block of West Mulberry Street. The event is free and open to the public and will be packed with food trucks, vendors, family-fun activities and offer an exclusive livestream of the game.

“We're excited to help take the annual Battle of the Ax to a new level with these events,” Rodriguez said. “The contest will support a fun, friendly rivalry, while the Tailgating Experience will unite the Texoma community together and serve as a reminder that Sherman-Denison is a single community.”
