Three people were hospitalized Friday following a single-vehicle wreck on U.S. Highway 82 near Southmayd.

Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Greg Whitmire said the wreck occurred near the intersection with Hazelwood Road at approximately 9:20 a.m. Whitmire said that as a Ford pickup was traveling east on U.S. Highway 82, the tread separated from the right rear tire on the vehicle, causing the 39-year-old female driver to lose control.

“Once the tread separated, that’s when she went over toward the center median,” Whitmire said, explaining she then over corrected to the right and “rolled it on its passenger side.”

The DPS trooper said the female driver, male passenger and a small child in the vehicle were all taken to the hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life threatening. Whitmire said the driver sustained neck injuries, the male occupant received a head injury and the child was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office and Southmayd Police also responded to the scene and crews reduced eastbound traffic on Hwy. 82 to one lane as they cleared the wreck.

Whitmire said motorists can reduce their risk of tread separation by regularly checking the air pressure in their tires and regularly inspecting tires for any damage.
