The Texas Department of Public Safety said a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle in Whitesboro in early Wednesday morning.

DPS Staff Sgt. Mark attack said troopers were dispatched to the scene on U.S Route 377, near Old Town Road near Whitesboro at 6 a.m. where they found Benjamin Gleaton, 22, of Denton, dead.

“The driver saw a pedestrian standing in the roadway, tried to avoid striking him, but they collided and the pedestrian died,” Tackett said.

Gleaton was pronounced dead at the scene. It was unclear, Tackett said, why the man was in the middle of the road.

Tackett said Gleaton was not standing in an area of the roadway marked for pedestrians and said he did not know what the speed limit was where the collision occurred. Tackett said no charges or citations were filed against the driver.
