The Denison Police Department said a five-year-old boy was flown to the hospital Friday night after he was bitten by the family dog.

Lt. Mike Eppler said the incident occurred at a home in the 100 block of Sharon Circle sometime after 6 p.m. He said at least two children were interacting with the dog when they apparently startled it.

“It appears that the kids had been playing with the dog and may have come up behind it or something and spooked it,” Eppler said. “The dog only bit the child once, but it was enough to cause a substantial wound.”

Eppler did not know the child’s condition as of Saturday afternoon or which hospital he was flown to but said he believes the injuries the boy sustained were not life-threatening.

The Denison Police lieutenant said the dog was not aggressive toward the children during their previous interactions nor did it display any aggression after it bit the child.

“The dog was on a leash and everything was as it was supposed to be in that regard,” Eppler said. “It didn’t look like an attack. The dog just appeared to be scared and reacted.”
