A Sherman man was hospitalized with critical injuries Tuesday after he attempted to evade Texas Department of Public Safety Officers on his motorcycle and crashed into a sedan.
DPS Trooper Mark Tackett said Eric Davis, 41, was traveling south on FM 1417 Tuesday afternoon when a DPS unit initiated a traffic stop and attempted to pull him over. Tackett said Davis then attempted to evade the trooper and ran a red light as he entered the U.S. Highway 75 service road intersection and collided with a southbound sedan.
Tackett said Davis was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision and was initially transported from the scene by ambulance to an area hospital. However, his condition worsened and he was eventually flown to Medical City Plano for treatment. The 70-year-old female driver of the sedan was taken to Texoma Medical Center, but Tackett said he did not know the extent of her injuries.
Tackett said the initial stop was related to a “traffic violation” but did not elaborate further.
Officials from DPS, the Sherman Police Department and Sherman Fire-Rescue all responded to the scene. Traffic along FM 1417 and the northbound Highway 75 service road was diverted as troopers conducted their investigation.
Tackett encouraged all motorists to exercise caution as they traveled during the holiday weekend and said it was too early to determine whether any citations or charges would be issued against Davis.
