VAN ALSTYNE — Late Wednesday night, Van Alstyne firefighters were called to Cavender Motors, 15,371 U.S. Highway 75, because of a fire. Most of the details were not yet available, as of 11:40 p.m., because firefighters were still busy extinguishing flames and trying to protect the area from further damage because of gas tanks in the immediate vicinity.

Police officers from both Van Alstyne and Howe blocked traffic on the westbound U.S. Highway 75 service road between exits 51 and 52 — further protection against injury from possible explosions.

The fire looked to be contained to the back side of the building. The front showed no visible signs of fire damage, as seen from the east service road, across the highway. There appeared to be at least eight emergency vehicles lining the west service road on both sides of the used car lot.

Almost a dozen vehicles were parked at the Van Alstyne fire station, possibly driven there by off-duty and volunteer firefighters.

No injuries were reported.
