The 25-year-old man who was shot in the head last week died Tuesday night, and Denison Police arrested the alleged shooter for manslaughter Wednesday morning.
Police said Devin Wayne Owens died at 11:20 p.m. in a Plano hospital after he was in critical condition since the shooting early Friday morning. Police identified the suspect as Brandon Kyrell Jeffery, 26. He was booked into jail Wednesday. Police initially described the shooting as an accident, which occurred shortly after midnight in the parking lot of Tupelo Honey Bar and Grill on East Woodard Street.
Denison Police Lt. Mike Eppler previously said Mr. Owens was in the driver’s seat of a vehicle, and Jeffery was in the backseat. Eppler said the Jeffrey, thinking the gun was not loaded, pointed it at the victim and pulled the trigger. After authorities responded, Mr. Owns was flown to the hospital, and the shooter fled the scene.
Police knew the identity of the Jeffrey and later located him. He wasn’t arrested that day, but police did question him, Eppler said.
After Mr. Owens died, police obtained an arrest warrant and took the alleged shooter into custody.
Eppler said Wednesday afternoon that authorities are not looking to file any additional charges at this time.
