WACO — It came down to a matter of pounds but Denison had a pair of Lady Yellow Jackets earn state championships at the Class 5A powerlifting meet at the Extraco Events Center on Friday.

Senior Jaydan Hunt and junior Kailey Jones ended up on the right side of tie-breakers to claim the crown in their respective weight classes, making up the difference going into the deadlift on the final rotation.

Hunt and Julia McGinnis of College Station tied with a total of 980 pounds at 165 pounds but Hunt weighed less than McGinnis, which is the tie-breaker.

“It still doesn’t feel real,” Hunt said. “It’s a crazy experience.”

In her first appearance at state, she set personal records on all three lifts — 375 pounds in the squat, tied for the best bench at 225 pounds and then pulled even with McGinnis at 380 pounds on the deadlift after entering the final lift down 10 pounds.

“At one point she was ahead of me in the deadlift and I went behind her so I knew what I needed,” Hunt said. “I knew I had won on the last one.”

Alice’s Alexis Estringel was far back in third at 935 pounds.

Jones also made up a huge deficit to win the crown at 181 pounds after coming in fourth place last season.

“Coming off the platform, it was amazing,” Jones said. “All the hours we put in the weight room had paid off.”

She tied College Station’s Katie Lollar with a total of 1,140 pounds, which is a state record at the weight class, and was able to get the tie with a 445-pound deadlift that is also a state record at that weight class.

“I knew that her pulls weren’t as high as mine,” Jones said. “I knew I could come up and it would come down to the last deadlift.”

Jones went into that lift down 35 pounds after she squatted 450 pounds and benched 245 pounds — efforts that were better than everyone but Lollar. She set the state meet record with that bench press before Lollar surpassed her by five pounds.

Castroville Medina Valley’s Destiny Andrade was a distant third at 1,010 pounds.

Denison finished fourth in the team standings with 14 points, behind Port Lavaca Calhoun, Brownsville Lopez and College Station.

Class 4A

Anna’s Vail Springer won the Class 4A state title on Friday at 198 pounds with a total of 1,040 pounds, edging Lytle’s Katelin Van Dong by five pounds.

Springer had a squat of 435 pounds and a bench of 275 pounds to take a 95-pound lead going into the deadlift. Van Dong almost made up the difference after Springer deadlifted 330 pounds.

Anna’s Hailee Anderson was third in the weight class with a total of 1,020 pounds.

Anna’s Ashley Enriquez was third at 259-plus pounds with a total of 1,050 pounds, earning a tie-breaker against Ebony Wolridge of Giddings.

Anna’s Macy Davis placed fourth at 181 pounds with a total of 900 pounds on a tie-breaker with Somerset’s Illea Lugo as the Lady Coyotes finished fourth in the team standings after losing a tie-breaker with Rio Hondo.

Bonham’s Lourdes Jaimes was eighth at 97 pounds with a total of 565 pounds.

Bonham’s Kandycee Walker was 10th at 114 pounds with a total of 695 pounds. Gainesville’s Jazmin Tejada was disqualified.

Melissa’s Priscilla Adejokun bombed out on the deadlift at 259 pounds.
