A Fannin County man died after he accidentally shot himself in the leg early Wednesday morning.
Fannin County Sheriff Donnie Foster said deputies and an ambulance responded to a residence on State Highway 78 north of Bonham at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. Authorities found a 59-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his leg, and the man was transported to a local hospital.
“From everything we saw at the scene, it appeared that he had been cleaning a gun,” Foster said.
Foster said the magazines were out of the gun and a cleaning kit with cleaning rods were at the scene — signs that indicate the man was cleaning the weapon. Relatives at the house were asleep and were alerted after hearing the gunshot. The relatives found the wounded man and called 911. The man, who the sheriff’s office did not identify, later died at the hospital. Foster said it appeared the bullet struck an artery because the man bled profusely. Foster said the evidence indicates that it was an accident.
“We don’t believe it was suspicious in nature,” Foster said.
