GateHouse Media LLC recently announced the acquisition of Harris Enterprises, a family-owned collection of newspapers in central Kansas and eastern Iowa.

GateHouse Media — the parent company of Texoma Marketing and Media Group, which publishes the Herald Democrat — closed on an agreement Wednesday to acquire substantially all of the assets of Harris Enterprises. The acquisition includes six newspapers-of-record and multiple weekly and niche print products.

“The Harris newspapers have consistently been recognized for their quality news coverage, editorial content, printing quality and digital news innovation,” GateHouse Media CEO Kirk Davis said.

Included in the deal are The Hutchinson News, Salina Journal, The Burlington Hawk Eye, The Hays Daily News, The Garden City Telegram and The Ottawa Herald. In addition to the print publications, the acquisition includes Harris’ press facilities, all related websites and other digital operations.

“This is a large, exciting addition to our existing Kansas and Iowa operations and will become an integral part of our Western Division,” Davis said.
