Registration is now being taken for the free Cooking for One workshops being sponsored by the Hope Center of Texoma. The center is an outreach program of Home Hospice of Grayson, Cooke and Fannin Counties.

The workshop is designed to give recipe ideas to persons now cooking for themselves, as well as giving participants the opportunity for good food and company with others who have experienced a loss. Dates are April 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 5 p.m .until 6:30 p.m. at the Home Hospice office, 505 West Center, in Sherman. Teaching the workshop is cooking enthusiast Melinda Kyla, the administrative assistant at Home Hospice.

"Cooking for One is open to anyone," says Kyla. "It can be for someone who doesn’t know how to cook at all or for skilled cooks who would like to share ideas and gain new ideas from others. A lot of people feel discouraged when they are only cooking for themselves. I hope to make it fun for them again."

Kyla tells of one special event during the fall Cooking for One workshop. Two of the men participating surprised the women in the group with roses. Some of the women hadn’t received flowers since their husbands died.

"The day they brought the roses was my mother’s birthday," says Kyla. "Daddy used to get her yellow roses all the time. It was a very special moment and I’ve told that story to everybody. You never know what small thing you can do to touch someone."

Jolene Senek, LBSW, CT,GC-C, the Home Hospice bereavement coordinator, adds, "Ultimately, when you come to Cooking for One, you have a fun and relaxing time. There’s no agenda. It’s simply a time for fellowship and interacting with others who have experience similar losses, plus you get a free meal and you can’t beat Melinda’s cooking."

Cooking for One is free, but registration is requested so that Home Hospice can provide adequate materials. Call Senek at 903-868-9315 to register. For more information on this or other workshops offered by the Hope Center and Home Hospice, go to www.homehospice.org/hopecenter/.
