LAWRENCE, Kansas — University of Kansas law students Matt Huntsman of Sherman and Jon Simpson of Wichita, Kansas won top honors for their written brief at the North American rounds of the Stetson International Environmental Law Moot Court Competition. The event was held Jan. 24-25 in Denver, Colorado.

The competition focused on international, environmental and human rights law. This year’s theme was on sea turtle protection and cultural practices, challenging participants to consider the legal implications of pitting indigenous people’s rights against protection of endangered species. Teams from the University of Kansas, Wake Forest, the University of Maryland, Pepperdine, American University, the University of Hawaii, the University of California-Hastings and the Bahamas were among participants. Huntsman’s and Simpson’s brief, which they spent five months preparing, was named the best of the competition.
