Mary Brown Paul Book Review Club

The Mary Brown Paul Book Review Club met Dec. 19 at The Library Grill. President Carolyn Andrews introduced guest speaker, Mary Booty.

Booty, an actress, earned a bachelor of arts degree in speech and theater from Northern Illinois University and a master’s degree from Southern Methodist University where she was the Artist in Residence in 2008. She is a member of the Actors Equity Aassociation and co-founded a reading program in 1995. Her program was based on the book "The Women Who Wrote The War" by Nancy Caldwell Sorel. This book and other sources explained how women broke the glass ceiling in newsrooms when the men went to follow World War II, leaving openings for women. Raquel Rutledge, Nellie Bly, Dorothy Thompson, Ruth Cowan, Margaret Burke White and Lee Miller all found their way into war zones over the objections of such people as General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Lee Miller began her career age age 19 as a model for Conde Nast. She went to England, on to Paris in 1944, and to Munich in 1945 where she was photographed in Hitler’s bathtub.

The next meeting will be March 20, 2014. Bringing the program will be Dave Tanner.
