SHERMAN — Harmony Missionary Baptist Church will be celebrating its 146th church anniversary and 22nd pastor and wife’s anniversary this weekend. There will be a service at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

The Saturday speaker will be the Rev. Ron Shaw of Light Church in Mesquite. Shaw is a former pastor of Harmony Baptist.

The Sunday afternoon speaker will be Gahlen Warren of Fellowship Baptist Church in Sherman.

The theme for the programs will be Psalm 91:4.

Over the years, the church has reached out to the community in many ways.

The church’s food pantry is a distribution center for the North Texas Food Bank and the Mother’s Day out ministry transformed into a day care center that can serve up to 100 children.

Every year, the pastor the Rev. Clifton Eaton travels to Liberia where he trains other church workers to teach the Gospels in African villages.

The church works on economic empowerment projects. In 2009, a goat rearing project was started. A soap manufacturing project that was started in the Bible school in 2010 expanded into four churches and two pepper planting projects were added. In 2009, a Dodge van was shipped to Africa with bicycles, books, clothes, and medicine costing just under $10,000. In the last few years, we helped build a well and sent another truck full of supplies to Liberia. The annual visits were temporarily suspended during the Ebola epidemic but will resume this year.

The church is located at 2111 E. Tuck St. in Sherman.
