This weekend in Texoma is all about being outside and enjoying the history of southern Oklahoma and North Texas. Saturday, there will be a festival on each side of the Red River, a community service event and two opportunities to learn about nature in this area. All of these events are family friendly and all of the events encourage learning about Texoma.

1. 100 years strong

A southern Oklahoma courthouse turned 100 this month. The Bryan County Courthouse in Durant, Oklahoma, will have its centennial celebration beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday. The celebration will include removing the cornerstone of the building. In the cornerstone is a time capsule from 1917. Celebration attendees will be able to view time capsule items at the courthouse Saturday. There will also be a parade, dance and festival on the courthouse grounds.

2. America’s bird

Hagerman Wildlife in Sherman will have its monthly children’s program, “Refuge Rocks” Saturday. Children ages 4-12 can attend to learn about eagles from 10-11:30 a.m. at the refuge. To register or for more information about the programming at Hagerman, call 903-786-2826.

3. Santa Claus is comin’ to town

Denison is celebrating Christmas all month long. The first day for Denison’s “Christmas in July” festival will be Saturday. The second day will be July 29. The festival will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Main Street in Downtown Denison. There will be food trucks and other vendors. Plus, Santa will be on site to take pictures with children.

4. Clean up, clean up, everybody, everywhere!

Denison wants to urge area residents to get involved with the “Keep Texas Beautiful” movement. The city of Denison will host a neighborhood clean up Saturday at Legacy Park. The “Keep Denison Beautiful” event will be held from 8 a.m. to noon at 531 W. Bond Street. Community service hours are offered. Drinks and hot dogs will be served and a drawing will be held.

5. Rowing down the river

Fastrac Boat Charters and Cruises is offering tours of Lake Texoma Saturday. The tour starts at 1 p.m. and guides will tell patrons about the history of the lake and about points of interest, including marinas, million-dollar homes and the Denison Dam. Tickets for the tour are $19. Fastrac Boat Charters and Cruises is located at 300 Lighthouse Dr., Suite C, in Pottsboro.
