While many people may be gearing up for weekday Fourth of July celebrations, some people may be looking for ways to celebrate patriotism before the big day. North Texas has many opportunities to support Americans and American culture this weekend. From sports to music to plays, here are five events to make the most of this weekend.


1. America vs. Canada


A soccer game can sometimes take on national implications, especially when it’s played this close to Independence Day. FC Dallas will be playing FC Toronto Saturday at Toyota Stadium in Frisco. The game begins at 6 p.m. at 9200 World Cup Way in Frisco. Tickets are $28 and FC Dallas will next play FC United at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.


2. All-American sports


Baseball is one of the great American passtimes so Texoma residents can spend this patriotic weekend down in Frisco enjoying a Rough Riders baseball game. The game starts at 7:05 p.m. Sunday and the Frisco team will be taking on the Springfield Cardinals. The game will be played at Dr. Pepper Ballpark, 7300 RoughRiders Trail in Frisco.


3. All-American country


Area residents do not have to go far to listen to a country music superstar this weekend. Vince Gill will be at Winstar World Casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma, on Friday. Gill has won 20 Grammy awards and was nominated 40 times. He has won 12 Country Music Association awards and four Academy of Country Music awards. This Norman, Oklahoma, native will take the stage at 9 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at www.ticketmaster.com.


4. Talented tykes


The Oklahoma Shakespearean Festival has been having children’s theater workshop for the past four weeks. The children, ages 4-13, will be showcasing what they learned during weekend performances this weekend. The play “The Lion King” will be staged at the Montgomery Auditorium at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, Oklahoma, this weekend. Performances will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday.


5. Western dancing


Two more artists that have been recognized by the Recording Academy will be in Durant, Oklahoma, this weekend. Grammy award winner LeAnn Rimes and Grammy award nominated Trace Adkins will take the stage at 7 p.m. Saturday at Choctaw Casino Resort. Tickets can be purchased at www.ticketmaster.com.
