Those summer days

Summer is officially here.

Where did the time go? It seems like just a couple of days ago, we were complaining about the cold rain. Now we are complaining about the high temperatures. Of course, people are rarely happy with the weather.

Summer in North Texas means that we need to stock up on sunscreen, water bottles and ice cream. Well, the ice cream isn't really necessary, but why not?

Why not indeed. "Why not" should be the official question of summer. Want to waste away a day just watching the waves roll in and out at the lake? Why not?

Want to get up early and take a run before the heat sets in? Why not?

Want to put that watermelon in the fridge so it is nice and cold when we get back from church? Why not?

There will be times, I am sure, in the next 90 days that I will complain bitterly about the heat. There will also be times when I will long for fall and dream of Holiday Lights. That doesn't mean, however, that I won't enjoy strolling around the Town Center walkway after the sun goes down at least once while looking for a good deal on flip flops or something.

It also doesn't mean I won't sit outside and listen to the cicadas late at night and wonder at the summer world around me.

I will do those things and more. This summer, I look forward to seeing my niece's reaction to real fireworks and to teaching her how to run through a sprinkler.

There is only one season in which that really makes any sense, and that is summer -- the season of ice cream, watermelon, sprinklers, lakes, and hot dusty roads.

Let's have a great summer.
