Vet to cycle across America
Kevin Baker is on a mission that will require strength, courage and determination -- the same traits he learned while serving in the United States Navy. The disabled veteran is riding his bicycle to Washington, D.C., gaining petition signatures for a new flag designed to "Honor and Remember" men and women who have died while in military service to the United States.
Baker stopped in Sherman on Tuesday for a brief rest before continuing his 2,400-mile trek, which began in Norman, Okla. and will take around 15 weeks. Unable to use his legs due to a neurological impairment, the determined veteran is making the journey via his hand-operated bicycle which pulls his wheelchair. The American flag and the Honor and Remember flag proudly wave from the back of the wheelchair. He was joined in Sherman by local members of the Soldiers' Angels who also support veterans and the new flag.
The flag was created by George Lutz after his son, the George Anthony "Tony" Lutz II was killed by a sniper's bullet on Dec. 29, 2005 while on patrol in Fallujah, Iraq. Lutz and many other families who had lost loved ones serving in the military shared their grief and two of their concerns -- that their loved one's sacrifice was not in vain and that the nation would never forget. The petition, carried by Baker, urges Congress to adopt the flag as a new, national symbol by passing HR Bill 1034.
Baker is also riding to promote awareness of disabled American veterans. His own injuries occurred on Feb. 24, 1991 when he was a Navy firefighter working alongside U.S. Marines in Kuwait. A Scud missile his his barracks and he was thrown some 200 yards and slammed into a concrete wall. After months of hospitalization, he was discharged from service, receiving 10 percent disability, a small, monthly check and Social Security. In addition to the neurological impairment in his legs, Baker has Gulf War Syndrome and Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He has been unable to work and has lived in several places before coming to live with his brother who is a student in Norman, Okla.
During his ride to Washington, Baker is keeping an online journal at www.honorandremember.org. His brother-in-law will photograph part of the journey.

Kevin Baker was my twin brother. The things published in all the stories are not well vetted facts. If you tried to go through the Navy you'd see how unsound the foundation of this tale is. He had an alternate life. His discharge was not honorable. His injuries caused by excessive drug use of crystal meth.
Last I saw him was in 99/2000 in rehab when he fell off and disappeared once again. Some of the facts here are part of his ever evolving story and a list of cons he produced over the years. I don't want to diminish others' experiences of him, but I will tell you most of what he says does not stand up to fact. I hope his death has allowed him to move onto better things and released his pain.
