Durant Police

Attempt to sell food stamps -- Jan. 16, 3712 W. Main (Walmart), Officer Tim McEachern. Saturday, a loss-prevention officer held a man for police who, he said, approached him offering to sell food stamps. The report said, before on Friday the suspect approached the store officer in front of the men's restroom and said he would sell $200 worth of food stamps for $90 cash. The store officer told the man that selling food stamps was a crime and he needed to leave the store.

Saturday, he saw the suspect come back into the store and purchase some beer and a few food items. The suspect the left. Outside the store, the store officer told police, he watched the suspect ask another man if he wanted to buy some food stamps. Again, the store officer spoke with the suspect, saying he had been warned and now was being detained.

He called police, who issued a restriction from Walmart property. McEachern discovered that the suspect had previously been issued a no-trespass notification in September from another Walmart store in Albuquerque, N.M., where he had been arrested for shoplifting.

The food stamp card was labeled with the suspect's name and was issued in New Mexico.

The report said that, when asked, the suspect stated he didn't know it was against the law to sell food stamps for money. After being read his Miranda Rights, the suspect stated, according to the report, "I know how to play it, I'm not saying anything."

Police continued the investigation and determined that there was more than $500 on the car, and so this offense rises to the level of felony, the report states.
