This man needs to be put to sleep. PTS'd - as we would any animal or dog that is a danger to society. I'm sorry, as a person who strong believes in God. He is the one that is demon possessed and should be dispatched NOW! And then burned! P*u*r*e E*vill!!!

Freak : 3/19/2009
This guy is absolutely a sick freak!! This man and any others like him deserve instant death! There is no help for someone who is this sick. I'm sorry people- if u think it's wrong to delete a glitch like this you too must be a sick freak!!! There's no excuse nor disease nor reasoning on something like this. The only reason Andrea Yates and all these freaks keep doin what they do is because we allow it! We have become a twisted country in making excuses for mentally ill people. If they are ill lets relieve their issues and end their constant torture. Execution is the only logical explanation!! It's stupid to try helping these people when their mind isn't there to begin with. Thats like keeping a rabid dog and daily injecting him with valium. it's just plain stupid!! Hmmm- doesn't take a scientist to figure this out.

I have posted this before on another thread. Someone can have a mental illness and still know the difference between right and wrong. Again, he knew what he did was wrong. He has nothing to lose by what he is doing to himself now. . . trying to prevent his own execution.

Incredible. : 1/12/2009
Sometimes I believe the Middle East's "eye for an eye" justice system would do much more good here than the ridiculous system we have. His mental illness doesn't matter at this point: he's a threat to society and to himself, and that threat needs to be nullified immediately. The poor girl's family could definately sleep better knowing that that monster is gone where none can return from. On an unrelated note, I've read a few comments about 'squeamish liberals'. Well, I'm about as liberal as they come and I have no qualms about the death penalty (as you've probably guessed from my previous statements). Please keep in mind that not all of us agree with ALL of the viewpoints of our party.

Pray they carry out the sentence . . . : 1/12/2009
Those of you who keep saying that we should pray for this man (I agree) and forgive him (I agree) need to study your theology a bit. Saint Augustine clearly defined the reasons why we should favor capital punishment. First of all, the church is subordinate to the law of the land. You know, that old line about "Render unto Caesar . . ." Secondly, and this is the important one, by setting a firm date for this man's execution and then sticking to it you are giving him the opportunity for salvation. Few people have the gift of knowledge of when they are going to die. When the clock starts ticking and it gets down to the last few minutes this man will make his decision about where he wants to spend eternity. The ball is in his court. Last of all, St. Augustine reminds us that by putting this man to death we stop him from committing MORE sins, which would further endanger his soul. This criminal needs to die. Pray for him, but don't pray for his physical release. Pray for his spiritual release.

Sorry to burst your bubble "Texas" and all of you other liberals on here but when he viciously murdered this innocent woman and kids, he forfeited all of his civil as far as I'm concerned regardless of what the law says. What about his victim's civil rights?? What rights did they get to excercise?? Let him do this to YOUR kids or grandkids and see if you are still as worried about his civil rights being violated - I am NOT!!

Most of you also appear to be insane. Put the man down. He does not deserve to have tax dollars spent on him and worse more he is a liability to society. Also, stop telling mental people that there is a god and a devil. Clearly the results are disastrous.

Why give him lethal injection -- it's the easy way out. Give him life without parole and put him in general population (not protective custody). Inmates who kill children do not fare too well with their fellow inmates. After several years (if he is still in one piece), he'll wish he had been executed. (PS: Have him share a cell with Andrea Yates and Dena Schlossler; they all deserve each other)

dual diagnosis : 1/11/2009
* It was never proven that the hallucinations were drug induced(which in reality is almost impossible). *Most people with severe mental illness have dual diagnosis. *This man made several attempts to get professional help. I believe the hospital should have been held responsible(including the staff on duty at the time). Was Mr. Thomas on any anti psychotic drugs while he was in jail here in Grayson County? *************************** Jason Clark, public information officer for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, said that prison officials discovered Thomas’ most recent injury just after noon Dec. 9. “An officer on death row was conducting a security check on 10 building when he observed what appeared to be blood on the face of (Thomas),” Clark said. He said Thomas told officials he had pulled out his eye and eaten it. “The attending physician determined that (Thomas) needed further medical treatment. At (1:55 p.m.), Thomas was taken by security staff to East Texas Medical Center in Tyler. After being treated by the ETMC medical staff, he was transported to the Jester 4 Psychiatric Unit in Richmond where he remains at this time.” Clark confirmed that the eye injury is not the first self-inflicted wound Thomas has suffered during his stay on Death Row. Clark said that on July 14, Thomas cut his neck with a razor. “The 1.5 inch-long laceration required 8 sutures,” Clark said. Mr Thomas needs to be under constant suicide watch and his meds need to be monitored more closely. If he had gotten the help he needed from our local hospital when he asked for it,perhaps all involved would still be living healthy and loving lives...

WHAT TO SAY : 1/11/2009
I could say many things about this case but I will keep this short. I know that Andre did ask for help before he went off the deep end and ended the lives of 3 people that should be alive and loving life to it's fullest what he done is beyond words. He should have been able to get the help with his mental illness but people didn't do their jobs, as a parent of a child with mental illness due to something beyond his control getting help in Grayson County is a joke especially MHMR. BUT this Andre person should die for what he done so the next time he tries to take his life stand by turn your back and for God's sake let him do it!! I feel for both families turely I do may God watch over them always.

It is either respect their civil rights or keep them in a mental hospital. : 1/11/2009
What Mr. Thomas did just makes me shudder all over. I cannot imagine a sane or even an insane person doing that to themself. However whether it is fortunate or unfortunate, even the insane have civil rights. There has also been the unfortunate push to mainstream those who a mentally ill. Now we have the mentally ill being pushed out of mental hospitals into situations where they cannot make them take their meds because it violates their civil rights. If a person with a chronic mental illness wants to stop taking their meds, it is their right to do it. It is a violation of their civil rights to make them take their meds. If they commit a horrible crime while they were off their meds, then they need to pay for their crime. We have no one but ourselves to blame to allow this insane system to remain in place. The only way you can legally hospitalize someone who is mentally ill is if they are a danger to themselves and to others. Even then it is only a 72 hour hold unless they are sufficiently ill to require a longer commitment. Unfortunately the new name for hospitals for the chronically mentally ill is either the county jail or state jail. I am not saying it is right nor do I agree with it. I am just stating the reality of what can and cannot be done to or for the mentally ill. Personally, I would like their civil rights violated and they be required to take their meds.

Mental Illness : 1/11/2009
Who among us does not suffer from some sort of mental illness? Mental illness is not an excuse for bad behavior. Bad behavior needs consequences. Those with mental, physical and spiritual illnesses still are responsible for their actions. As a fellow sufferer of "mental illness of the spiritual variety", I have never been told that my actions were absolved because of my "disease". Just the opposite in fact, although I was not able to discern at the moment my action that caused another harm, I still had to take responsibility for it and make restitution (amends). If those actions had a penalty of death, that is the penalty I would have had to pay. It is called Debt. You take something, you give something back in return. We are not a very good example of a debt paying society (just look at our credit crisis).

andre thomas : 1/11/2009
The system is to blame, with it's selective care proceedures. The tax dollars that are now spent to care for Mr Thomas, could have and should have been spent before he committed those inhumane acts. Because he was overlooked families suffered. He blinds himself from the world, because the system blinded it's self from him. A lesson well taught, is a lesson well learned.

I am so saddened to see many of the postings here. This story is shocking in so many ways. Yes, this man committed a HORRIFYING series of crimes and he should clearly never be allowed on the streets again but to even suggest that someone who could PULL OUT THEIR OWN EYES is not suffering some sort of mental illness is in my eyes a possible sign of mental illness of your own. And if we are to accept that this man does have a severe mental illness it is equally as insane to suggest it had no effect on his behavior ie: the bizarre and violent ways he committed his crimes. I have the utmost compassion for the victims of violent crimes, having lost a close relative to violence myself but I know that the death of the perpetrator can never bring the victims back and a death sentence enforced without justice is an even more hollow victory. If Andre Thomas had received treatment before he had torn his own eyes out perhaps the families of the victim would not be be suffering the additional tortures of lurid press coverage as has been pointed out by previous posters. I have learned that there is no changing the mind of people such as those whose posts dripped such vitriol and hatred, with their demands to swiftly shoot this criminal and their echoes of lynch mobs. Their anger drives them not their compassion. These people may even go to church on Sunday and with no sense of irony call themselves good Christians and espouse the words of Christ or claim to believe in a "just" society ; in the end they ultimately want retribution, vengeance couched in neat words about taxpayer money and victims rights. They probably think it's all right to execute the mentally retarded, too. I'm sure Christ would be proud.

I also have some experience in the mental health field. Sadly, for some, there is a point that one can get to when you've gone too far, and you are beyond healing. The best thing for this man, and for everyone else, is for him to die. if you believe prayer is needed for this man, pray that the lord forgives him. but, like i said, there is a point of no return - i believe he crossed it.

Shame : 1/10/2009
A person that is insane cannot account for what they are doing. Those people wishing for him to be executed should get this into their heads. There are many mentally ill people amongst us. They have not asked to be like that. They could be anyone's child. So it does not help to quote how the victim's families will feel if they read this. I am sure it will be hard for them to be reminded of this occurances. But none the less, this man is mentally ill and should be treated accordinly. Would anyone be able to pull out an eye and claim that this is sane? So how should this man be made accountable for what he does because some voices inside him tell him to do this. I have worked with mentally ill persons and such an illness as such is a punishment that is put on many people without their own fault. Why don't people just differentiate a bit. If you like it or not, this man cannot be held responsible for what he does. And there are places where at least he can receive some kind of medical treatment rather than being left unsupervised on death row. I pray for him and also for the victims and their families.

Ahh Texas does anyone think? : 1/10/2009
I am glad to say that I don't live in Texas where it is in this case all but three of you have any feelings at all. Why, if we are going to bring back the shooting gallery, and hanging start to decapitate(for those of you who are slow that's means chopping off his head) people again. Why even have a Psychiatric Unit. I'm sure the violent autistics and schizophrenics should be put to death too. It would save so much tax money. I hope you all are forced to realize mental illness is not some kind of choice, unless it is normal in texas to decide to take your eyes out and eat them sucking on the gooey center before finishing it off. I am not a squeamish liberal I am realistic. People need to think before they speak and type.

Insane animal man : 1/10/2009
I've noticed comments asking readers to "pray for this man". THIS man said that God told him to kill these people. Hearing voices is indicative of insanity. Just how much of religion, particularly fringe Christian religion, is based on "revelations" by "voices" in the brain, I do NOT know. This man is beyond rehabilitation and beyond prayer. We know of Ed Gein who filled his house with human body parts and killed 2 women (adding THEM to his folk art collection). People couldn't get their hands on him, so they burned his house down !

Oh please. We have become such a panty waist society. We are making our SPECIES weaker by the minute by letting this guy and those like him continue to walk the earth. This guy is sick and he isn't gonna get better. If he were a dog, he would be put out of his misery - which would be the kindest thing for him. Let's see how many of those people that want to save this guy want to let him come live with them! No, they want someone else to do it. Then they don't have to think about it. When are the people in this country going to start taking responsibility for themselves and letting others do the same thing? This isn't about Liberal and Conservative. In natural law, this guy would have been killed. He probably wouldn't have survived childhood with the mental illness. Mother Nature takes very unkindly those mucking around in her neighborhood. Stuff like this will come back to bite us in the end.

Not to be mean, but this man has plucked out both of his eyes, if he was just trying to get away with what he had done there is no way he'd do that, therefore i believe that the man is sick *but religion is sick and that what's he's trying to pin it on. "Voice of God" ha!*. But that doesn't stop him from being a monster, and it doesn't stop the fact that if left alone he could further harm himself and others. He's already attempted suicide. Execute him and be done with it.

"Psychosis is a severe mental disorder characterized by delusions, hallucinations, and inability to deal with reality." - www.a2zpsychology.com Of course you can blame him but it is also clear that he is no longer in control. You say pray for this man? Why? He has lost his will to live. I have worked with people suffering from mental illness and even they know that what this man has done is wrong. I ask you, if his victims were your daughter and grandchildren, would you still say pray for this creature? You may say it is so, but I think not. Look at it like this, it costs around $30K to keep 1 death row inmate alive for 1 year, but it only costs us around $5K to carry out the sentence, you do the math. And why should the victims' family have to pay for the cause of their pain to live?

I disagree with the above comment saying it is someone elses fault these crimes were committed. That's the problem with a lot of people in this country, they never hold people accountable for there actions. I had my leg ripped off by a 18 year old girl driving her shiny sports car, ruining my entire life. I am a commercial pilot, fat chance for me to continue my dream that I worked for since I was a child. She got a slap on the wrist. This guys crime is so much worse. Hold him accountable, flip the switch.

They should do to him what he did to Leyna, how could anybody cut a 4 year olds heart out and live with this. They should let him die very slow so he will know the pain. People will soon take the law in their own hands and then there won't be as many people on death row for years to come.

Have you forgotten? : 1/10/2009
This guy isn't mentally ill 'naturally' - he is mentally ill because he CHOSE to abuse drugs and fried his brain. There is a huge difference between someone suffering from mental illness and someone who abused drugs for a recreational high to the point that he no longer functions normally. He made his choices in life and now he's paying the price for what he did to those sweet babies who awoke from their beds to find him cutting their hearts from their precious little bodies. Sorry, folks, but I have no sympathy for a monster like that. His attorneys can cry mental illness all they want, but that only puts them in the same league as him. They know he is not truely mentally ill, just brain dead from drugs. I guess now he's finding out that the horror scenes that play over and over in his head cannot be erased by plucking out his eyes. His mind's eye will always see the evil that he did. He's created his own personal hell and he'll have to live with it until the day he dies and experiences eternal hell. I'm a pretty liberal person, but not when it comes to someone as evil as Andre Thomas. There is no place in our world for the likes of him.

Mental Illness??? Seriously? : 1/9/2009
Why do we keep "people" like this alive? He killed 3 people 2 of which were babies. How does this deserve a reprieve from the death penalty? I have a couple people in my family that by the definition of mental illness have it. BUT if they were to go kill anyone else, including babies and then do something like cut their eyeballs out I wouldn't be complaining that they were mentally ill and needed help, I would be asking to be the executioner for them. THERE IS NO EXCUSE TO TAKING SOMEONE'S LIFE except self-defense and that just isn't the case here. Last time I checked babies aren't deadly. We need to quit blaming anyone and anything else and take responsiblity for our own actions. If they don't know what they are doing is wrong then they won't know they are going to die. Maybe we should start killing people the way they killed their victims. Stop wasting taxpayer money and have the victims families do justice how they think it should be dished out.

Enough with the excuses for his actions. He has to pay for his crime, regardless what voices told him to do it. It makes me sick to hear of people that use a cop out to get out of owning up to their consequences. He murdered 3 innocent people, he ATE HIS OWN FLESH AND BLOOD's HEART!!! This is not just someone who has a mental illness, at this point, why should we even consider rehabilitation? For what reason? He is a menace and a monster! I knew Andre growing up. He never seemed like he had any mental illness although he was a loner. He was an artist and liked to draw. The only people I would see him with were his brother or Laura. I know he cared for Laura because she lived around the corner from me and I would always see him or his bike there. We were young, maybe 13/14. To say that he should be put to death without first trying to understand his illness would be doing more harm than good. Tax payers aren't paying to keep a murderer alive. They're(we) paying to have him evaluated to diagnose his problem which could possibly identify what went wrong and prevent others from doing the same thing. He and I like many others we hung with were raised in alike enviroments but at some point something happened to him that made him turn. IN closing I do have to say, it's my opinion that he cut his eyes out because he couldn't stand to see the images of what he did and he thought if he couldn't see he wouldn't be able to re-live it. Just my 2cents on that. Imagine seeing those images over and over, of course that would drive anyone crazy.

It would save time and money if a .22 round was put in the back of their head so that it is instant and cost effective. The country's skin is growing thinner, the only thing keeping this country from being taken over are the brave men and women serving in the armed forces and those who choose to serve at home as police and correctional officers.
