Salvation Army captain jailed on drug charges

BY MARY JANE FARMER

HERALD DEMOCRAT

Salvation Army Capt. William David Grigsbay was jailed Saturday by Sherman Police. "Grigsbay was accused of felony possession of a controlled substance between 1-4 grams.

Sherman police Sgt. Bruce Dawsey said that the arrest was made at Grigsbay's home and not on Salvation Army property.

Sherman police Officer Brandon Toney and others were sent about 2:25 p.m. to the 600 block of Clay Lane, responding to a tip that someone there was using drugs, Dawsey said. At the home, described in Toney's report as a camper, police reported they found the suspect in possession of crack cocaine, Dawsey said.

They arrested Grigsbay on a felony charge of possession of controlled substance between 1-4 grams and he has since posted $2,500 bond.

Grigsbay was not at the local Salvation Army facility on Monday. The person who answered the telephone said there has been a colonel who is the designated spokesman for the Salvation Army in this incident, but that person was gone for the day. A message was left for the colonel.

A call made to Grigsbay's cell phone was not answered.

This is a sad event for all involved. I pray that Mr.
Grigsbay will get all the help he needs and the same for his family too. Meanwhile if you want to donate where it will be used well, there is the Grayson County Shelter in Denison. I have been close to that operation and have a family member that works there. A real class operation, helping where it matters most. On another note, I would like to see more churches involved in a real way and not in superficial ways to be "noticed". The current economic situation has produced a real crisis of those who need the most basic of things to continue their lives. We need to always be aware of the poor and needy, especially now.

zb4rn Of course you know that Grigsbay didn't give anyone anything for Christmas in this community except his time and anyone could have done that. The generosity to the community was from the Salvation Army and if he didn't want to be judged he wouldn't have done it in the first place. HE brought all of this upon himself I have NO pity for this man!!! Most of you have NO idea what he's putting his family through right now!!!!

Knows the truth

I don't care how humbly we ask God to heal this man, it won't happen unless Grigsbay himself wants it to happen!

We are not supposed to judge anyone. And the ones who are judging, you wouldnt be worry about it if you needed food for yours family or toys for Christmas. You wouldnt be saying anything then.

THAN ALL OF A SUDDEN HE DOESNT WORK THERE ANYMORE AND THE PROGRAMS ARE IN THE TOILET.....I JUST WONDER IF HE WAS GETTING TOO CLOSE TO SOMETHING OR WAS HE MAKING THE TWO OF THEM UNCOMFORTABLE?? WELL HE WAS GOOD AND I JUST WONDER HOW THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS GONNA GO NOW. THEY NEED TO GO FIND THAT YOUNG MAN AND BRING HIM BACK IN. HOPE THE NEW CAPTAIN WILL READ THIS.

I never said I was a faithfull soldier...can you not read...Cause I AM NOT one. I was high for 11 years. My family got me sober in April of 2006, I have been ever since. Now you want to quote Bible verses, what effect do you really think that will have on me? Absolutly none. What I HAVE to say is certinly written in blood that sorry excusse of a man nof God made my Mama cry. Who IS the most devout, faithfull, christian you could ever meet. After 69 years she has put in with The Salvation Army, she and all the others I care about at church deserve better. Now what was your real name again?

To: An Army Supporter... God helps those who help themselves. He has to want it and I'm not so sure that he does. Only time will tell but very few people go to drug rehab once and there is a miracle "cure". This will most likely be a very long hard battle for him and his family. God, and a few prayers alone won't work he has to work on this as well. However I do pray for his family in this difficult time.

Say NO to drugs!

Instead of critizing We need to be on our knees praying for the Grigsbay Family. All of them and also for The Salvation Army Corps here in Sherman. I do not condone what Captain Grigsbay has done but our GOD can heal all people if we just humbly ask HIM.I will still give The Salvation Army in every way!

TO SUE : 2/2/2010
As a friend of The Salvation Army, I find it ironic that YOU would call yourself a "faithful soldier" and that YOU would condemn someone else's drug use. Since you are so keen on snapping at someone's preaching, consider what Luke 6:41 says: "And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the plank in your own eye?"
Here's another one: Judge not lest ye be judged. As is the case with so many others who have commented, I will continue to support The Salvation Army, whose reputation for helping those in need supercedes the unfortunate circumstances in this one instance.

WAKE UP CALL : 2/2/2010
You know my mother in law worked for him at the Salvation Army a year or two ago. He treated her and I know some others up there very badly. She wrote the head quarters and let them know how it was working there and how he treated others and suggested an investigation be done. She didn't suspect this. S.A. has a fairly well known rehab facility in Dallas and in my opinion, knowing they were warned about him, this does not bode well for their reputation on a whole. They help people yet they close a blind eye when complaints are filed. Maybe they will learn the valuable lesson of listening with an open mind, THEIR Captains are capable of all the same human errors as the rest of us. My heart and prayers goes out to his family, they have to bare this burden in such a public ordeal.

Hater. Alcohol is currently legal in the U.S. Crack cocaine is not legal. Big difference. Apples and Oranges.

Whatever the problem is,be it a person, place or thing, people are human and are often subject to various temptations.Be careful where you point your finger.Whatever mistake the Captain has made,he has always been there for people.Try not being so judgemental.

Drugs do not descriminate : 2/2/2010
The flesh is weak, and the drug is so strong. Crack does not have any boundries-it tears your life apart, kills your soul and takes everyone down that uses it. There is nothing good about crack- it kills.
I pray that this man can turn his life around.
As for the Salvation Army; I will continue my support to them, the organization is very good and benefits thousands of people every year.

I kept telling my Mama that there just wasnt something right about him. After 30 years of being a proud Salvation Soldier, i refused to go back, which broke my Mama's heart. Because Capt. G stood at the pulpit and chastised the congreation for not giving enough money in the offering. I was appauled, Well now i guess he needed more fuel for that crackrock fire. If capt G nreads this, I will pray for you. I don't feel sorry for you, i don't pitty you. However Mrs.G Im sorry for everything you are going through. You, yall's kiddos and Major are in all of our prayers. God Bless....(Capt. G you better hope you get right, cause you have crushed our congreation)

Well : 2/2/2010
While this situation is unfortunate and truly shocking-I will still continue to support The Salvation Army. The good truly out weighs the bad!

Drugs do not descriminate : 2/2/2010
Drugs tear lives apart...it doesn't matter who you are, where you live, where you come from, how you were brought up, what position you hold. If you get hooked then rock bottom is the destination.

WHAT????? : 2/2/2010
You probably need to have some of the other "BIG WIGS" that's holding offices do drug tests. Alcohol is a drug too. But CRACK, it's just not acceptable. If alcohol or any drug is found in the test, then they should be exposed just like this guy. You'd be surprised who's using here in Grayson County.

Bad Deal All Around : 2/2/2010
What's it coming to? It's a shame that people like this have to ruin the name of a good, worthwhile organization with their personal defects. Makes you wonder how much of your donation went to purchase crack!

If the accusation is true, then it shows how pervasive the drug culture is in our lives.

Disgraceful! : 2/2/2010
How disgraceful! Salvation Army has always provided our area with many beneficial events and now we hear about someone of this low caliber--if proven guilty, he needs to be removed from this otherwise find organization.

OMG : 2/2/2010
We had wondered why Grigsbay wasn't showing up for local events. HOW SAD.
