SHERMAN -- Thanks to funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, all Sherman Independent School District employees will get a raise.

The board voted unanimously, minus absent member Debbie Burnett, to approve an $800 per year raise, plus one step on the pay scale, for teachers, nurses, librarians, counselors and speech pathologist.

The vote was in response to a state legislative mandate, and the district administration added a 2 percent raise to the mandate for all other Sherman Independent School District employees.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding will only cover the increase for two years, Assistant Superintendent for Business and Finance Bruce Barnett told the board, but he said a stipulation of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding is that programs created must be continued. He said, there is no clear indication of what exactly will happen to the raise after the two years if the Texas legislature doesn't take action.

Board President Kate Whitfield encouraged attendees to contact their legislators about funding schools.

Barnett also came to the board bearing some other positive financial news. The board voted to pay an extra $850,000 on an outstanding bond, which will save the district $795,600 in interest in the future.

Barnett said the extra payment, which he likened to an extra mortgage payment for a homeowner, was possible because of the savings the district had realized from the lower-than-expected 1.9 percent interest rate on the bond.

The board also voted to accept a tax rate of $1.44, the same as last year's rate.

"I just want to make sure the tax payers understand there is no increase," Whitfield said.

The board also recognized the several of the district's campus for a number of accolades.

"Here in our district we have a lot of good news to report," said Tyson Bennett, director of assessment and government programs.

The board praised the high school for its recognition by Newsweek magazine to be among the top 1,500 high schools in the nation. Fairview, Jefferson, Neblett, Sory and Wakefield elementary schools were honored for being named exemplary campuses, and Crutchfield and Washington elementaries and Dillingham Intermediate were honored for being recognized.

Bennett said Sherman High School, Piner Middle School and the district only missed being recognized by a few students.

"We think they're just right there," SISD Superintendent Al Hambrick said.

In other business the board welcomed appointee Betty Stoker to its midst. Stoker will take former President John Hendricks' seat, but only as a regular board member.

The board also:

  • accepted recommendations for a number of special education programs to be funded by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds;
  • approved the district teacher appraisal calendar and the list of appraisers;
  • approved several federal regulatory changes;
  • approved the student code of conduct;
  • and approved boys and girls soccer equipment bids for a total of $9,624.32 and custodial supply bids for $194,159.64.

So let me get this straight... Federal stimulus money is going into the teachers pockets rather than going to things the kids need, like books, supplies etc... Oh wait! Thats what the parents are for, cause we dont pay enough taxes for your salary!!! (which includes your 3 month PAID VACATION!!! and WEEKENDS OFF!!! Oh cant forget all the holidays!!!

sick of it...

Really?!? : 8/24/2009
You know, reading all of these negative comments saddens me. Did you really think you were going to make the big bucks teaching? I never got into the teaching profession for the large salary I was going to make...I got into it for my love of children and the ability to make a difference in their lives. Dr. Hambrick and CO are going to do what they want to do...but does that make any kind of difference to how I am going to teach my children? No, it doesn't. I work at a title I school with at-risk children across the board, and our school was still able to make exemplary. I am just happy that I have I job that I love, and money to be able to support myself. I don't need riches...i get them out of life.

Be Thankful for What you Have

pay gripes : 8/22/2009

wow

Just another thought : 8/21/2009
Just a thought--------- mess as stated the SISD employee who seem to be bent out of shape and a coward: what part of it did you create. How are your students doing? If they are not all at 100 % performance, should you move on to McKinney? Just wondering? You are not hurting the leadership, you are hurting our efforts to continue helping our kids by constanting trying to create negativity.

You failed to mention you received an $800. a year plus step pay. Most teachers step pay is $500. Doesn't $6.95 a day sound better to you.

Be Thankful

To Interesting SISD Employee : 8/20/2009
Sewage can be turned into compost which is a good thing I am happy that you are happy. I am a coward because I dont want to get fired till I can find a new job but you are happy so tell us who you are. Not bothered at all about the balanced budget it should have never gotten unbalanced but are you happy that they are paying less toward your insurance are you other districts did not use this method to balance their budgets. How I feel toward the leadership of this district will in no way impact the effort or caring that I have for my students so dont go there. Let me be perfectly clear I am not criticizing anyone except the leadership of this district as they are responsible for this mess. I guess what makes me the most upset is that they evidently dont think there is a problem or dont care. What do you want to bet that most of the employees feel like the majority of the posters here? We are not tearing down any hard work nobody cares what we think so rest easy tonight and get ready for your students.

Interesting : 8/20/2009
I think everyone is entitled to an opinion and is free to state it. I find it interesting that we have lots of students coming to school in 3-4 days and all some people want to do or talk about are things or people to tear down the hard work of our hard working SISD staff. As stated before,I hope that SISD educators (directors and teachers) do not give the sewage that runs through this cowardly screen 2 seconds of their time. It seems to bother some folks that the district has a balanced budget, improved scores and kids who perform. I think we need to focus on our kids and what we can do for them each day in the classroom to continue helping them improve. News for the haters---- the folks that you are criticizing are yourselves--- you are the SISD or community representatives. I am proud of my profession, the SISD and what we are doing for kids. And, I am proud to work in the SISD.

I have the perfect solution. Mckinney needs a new Superintendent . This would be a huge increase in pay for Dr. Hambrick and he would be bettering himself so he could save face. He could commute it is close. Sounds like a win win to me. Oh an by the way take the Piner administrators with you which would be fine since you hired her and seem to support her actions. All joking aside this is a wonderful opportunity for every one to come out a winner.

Visionary

: 8/20/2009
Well the leadership of Dr. Hambrick is the least of my worries I am convinced that the man has no clue when it comes to finances. Under his leadership we have increased non classroom employees at a cost to all employees thus eroding benefits and pay to the point that Sherman is no longer the school of choice when it comes to teaching. I am a lifelong resident of Sherman and I never thought that I would see the day that Denison and the smaller schools are preferred over ours. Sure our tax rate is higher and some of it is due to the bond election. We have nice buildings and are going to have a great administration building and look like a million dollars but for what? Teachers and district employees are the ones who make up your schools and what is happening to them is a shame. We are adding more work, threats, no discipline, and less pay and benefits which is a direct result of the Central Office. The sad thing is some people just don't see it. What ails the SISD is like a chronic lethal disease it wont kill fast but in the long run your doomed.

Excessiveness : 8/20/2009
WOW! Can you find anything to be happy about??? I do not get my insurance paid for by my employer....grow up...you probably get paid too much anyway! Do your job, deal with the politics and be glad to be an American...which by the way means...If you don't like it......GET OUT!!!! See ya later BYE BYE!!!!

Tired of Negative Attitudes

Laughing all the way to bank? : 8/19/2009
I don't know about the other Bearcats, but this is how I plan on spending my whopping $4.28 per day. (800 dollars divided by 187 days.) Here's my top ten shopping list: 10. home health remedies 9. contraception (can't afford a slip-up) 8. migraine medication 7. budget mental health sessions (sliding scale fee) 6. a mirror to practice my "happy smile" 5. new newspapers for the roof of my house beneath the bridge 4. pinto beans so my kids can enjoy a free "sauna" in the bathtub 3. my own copy of "101 Cooking Secrets for Reptiles, Rodents, and Insects" 2. a pre-owned bicycle 1. resume paper

Yukon Envy

Confidence : 8/19/2009
Personally, I will be glad when Dr. Hambrick tells everyone to just shut-up and do what you are paid to do. This would be a sign of leadership, of taking control, of fighting back. However, all I see is a quiet man lacking the confidence to step out of line and raise a little... But, then again that is the problem isn't it? Not money, raises, management, or taxes alone. The problem's root is the lack of CONFIDENCE among the faculty, staff, and the community in the leadership of SISD. The CONFIDENCE in our leadership to lead. We had the Assistant Superintendent who no one wants to mention. We have the Middle School Principal who CO just chooses ignore, hoping and praying no one will notice the "trouble". We have the new Intermediate School Principal that CO did not bother to google to see if there was a problem. This confidence was lost in a blink. The sad thing is, it will take years to rebuild. Are new educators going to have the confidence to apply at SISD? Are veteran educators going to have the confidence to remain in the face of possible benefit reductions, reductions in force(RIF), low morale, and poor working conditions? Will the community have the confidence to pass the TRE the next time it is on the ballot? Will parents have the confidence to send their kids to such a mess? Will SISD every be able to recruit new leaders to sort out this convolution??? It is time to clean house and get trustworthy leadership before it is too late.

Teachers are happy that Mrs. Stoker is on the board we do not think that she will be taken by the Administrations spending on non classroom personal.

Staff

: 8/19/2009
How come Denison articles never draw any responses? Could it be that they passed the tre and their tax rate is lower than Sherman? Just curious.

Where is all of the excitement our campus is dead? Something is going on, no one is talking to anyone.

fREEBIRD

SISD : 8/19/2009
The reception he received was cool because many SISD employees, teachers especially have lost respect for him. He spends like there's no tomorrow, yet, when they get a raise, the insurance eats it up. And the teaching assistants make nothing! I just don't think he's listening...Too bad he can't get rid of those few students who cant bring his scores up!

Campus cutie

: 8/19/2009
In my 8 years with the district the reception Dr. Hambrick received at the convocation was very very cool. I wonder if any one else picked up on this?

Glad to see from the posts that there is at least one happy employee. You know you can be unhappy and still do your job thats what professionals do but doesn't mean they have to like what has happened to them. I am sure there are a lot more satisfied employees out there but I don't know you they would be certainly not at our campus.

The state insurance is higher but the district contribute less than it has chose to in the past thus the large increase in cost to the employee which in effect equals a pay cut for every District employee and with the raises some employees especially the lower pay scale ones are really hurting. But... the budget is balanced.

Anybody catch the Denison Tax Rate? 1.2771 Shermans is 1.44 we have a much better school system

DF

: 8/19/2009
Yes you are right we are not in the red anymore thanks to you and every employee of the district who now has less money paid toward their insurance. Thanks Dr. Hambrick. If you paid attention to the one time adjustments and the passing rates for next year you would find that under these and compared with the rates for this year that we will be borderline unacceptable unless we can get another 10% from the students. I am proud of my profession just wish it was paid like a profession. I am not a downer just letting the public know how the majority of SISD employees feel.

SISD employee who is about to be down

glass half empty : 8/18/2009
For everyone reading these comments. The "SISD Employee" is clueless. I am an employee too. The new insurance is the state(TRS) plan that just about every school district in Texas uses. It is more expensive, but it has better co-pays and deductibles. If you paid attention to Dr. Hambrick's speech Monday morning, you would also know we are not in the red anymore and TAKs scores are up. I am proud of my profession, and I like doing my job. Stop being a downer!

happy employee

: 8/18/2009
I believe Betty will make an excellent board member she has experience and she is not afraid of Hambrick noe does she have an ulterior motive for being on the board like some of them.

KL

: 8/18/2009
Would not have got the step if it had not been mandated by the stimulus money. Step increases are history in Sherman now that Hambrick has found out he doesn't have to give them. He still spends money like there is no tomorrow.

Concerned

: 8/18/2009
Would like to think the board for the raise but is sad that we are in the financial shape that we are in. In the long run other districts have given more so SISD will be even further behind when it comes to benefits an pay, but once again thanks it almost makes up the amount that was taken away from the insurance contribution.
