Denison considers grant for sidewalks
The Denison city council will continue the discussion of the safe routes to school program during the work session at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Council Chambers in City Hall 500 W. Chestnut St., to decide the agenda for next Monday's meeting.
During the last meeting, the counselors gave approval for Community Development Director Tom Speakman to pursue a grant in order to approve sidewalks around a local school to aid students in walking to school. The proposal faced strong objections, as many of the neighborhoods have large oak trees and utilities blocking where the sidewalk would go.
The council will discuss holding a public hearing to receive input from the citizens regarding the program, and consider a resolution of support and commitment to maintain the sidewalks after construction.
Also on the agenda are discussions of street renaming, from Milton Drive to Texoma Medical Center Drive, and a quarterly finance report. Carryover from the previous fiscal year to the current fiscal year will also contemplated, and the council will consider an ordinance authorizing stop signs at West Acheson Street and South Maurice and West Murray Street at South Fairbanks.
Monday's agenda will also include an executive session to consider an extension of a leave of absence; following the executive session will be open action.
