Details released about slain Cartwright, Okla. girl

While authorities transferred Jason Lee Belew from the Grayson County Jail to the jail in Durant Wednesday, the medical examiner released details about the death of the little girl Belew stands accused of killing.
Belew appeared before a judge in Bryan County late Wednesday and was denied bond.
Renee Steward with the Oklahoma Medical Examiner's Office said preliminary autopsy reports show that Dakota Hughes, 11, of Cartwright died from asphyxiation by strangulation. The medical examiner is ruling the manner of death a homicide.
The rest of the autopsy results, Steward said, should be available "any time now."
Belew is scheduled to appear in a preliminary hearing in Bryan County on Jan. 14, 2010.
Authorities contend that Belew killed Dakota Hughes in the early morning hours Sunday after a night of drinking with the child's aunt.
An affidavit of probable cause filed in the case said the aunt and the child had picked Belew up in Sherman and that he was in the house when the aunt went to sleep.
"The aunt found Dakota nude and dead on a bedroom floor. There were injuries to Dakota's face, head, neck and genitalia," said Emily Redman, district attorney for the 19th District in Oklahoma.
Grayson County court records show that Belew pleaded guilty in March 2003 to a charge of assault causing bodily injury and received one year probation, and deferred adjudication. The same records show Belew paid all his mandated court costs and fines in relation to that conviction.
The Hughes family is planning Dakota Hughes' funeral Saturday. The family requests donations for funeral expenses be sent to Cunningham Funeral Home, P.O. Box 387, Colbert OK 74733.

I agree with Hoping. Why was this child ever placed in such a dangerous situation to begin with? Regardless of what may have transpired over the course of the evening, was it so important for the aunt to hook up with this guy and drink while Dakota was in her care? Who does that?

We cannot stop child molesters and the like from harming our children. The only deterrent is the death penalty and its use. I know the liberals say the death penalty won't prevent the murderers and rapiest from committing their crimes; but by putting them to death we will damn sure prevent them from doing it again. As it is now with our liberal justice system the criminal element has no respect for the law. Beat up and rob someone and all you get for it is a couple years probation and restitution. Big Whoop! What we need to do is elect lawmakers who have the balls to change the existing laws and make criminals pay a higher price for their crimes; such as mandatory incarceration and change the incarceration time to the same as the federal government, day for day. If you get 10 years in jail you serve 10 years without parole. My heart goes out to the family of this child.

Is restitution and court costs truly truly what our justices have compromised for and are being satisfied with? Is the citizens and human life in "this" place become so expendible that we treat 'we the people' so....minutely inhumanly? Come on! Americans! We must DEMAND a change! If people want to act beastly truly CONVICT and JUDGE them immediately as is FAIR based on their crime and make it SWIFT so as not to be costly to society monitarily or with other's LIVES! Stop political BS and help us have a BETTER QUALITY of LIFE here and now ! May God bless this child and comfort this family in their loss.

WHAT IS REALLY SAD ABOUT THIS SITUATION IS THIS INNOCENT CHILD WAS A SPECIAL NEEDS CHILD WHO HAS FOUGHT MOST OF HER LIFE TO OVERCOME ILLNESS, AND MANY OBSTACLES TO FIGHT FOR HER LIFE AND ALL IT TOOK WAS SOMEONE SO VILE, AND EVIL TO TAKE THAT ALL AWAY FROM HER IN AN INSTANT. THE LORD SAID VENGENACE WAS HIS, AND I HOPES HE REALIZES WHAT HE IS IN FOR.

In my opinion there is no punishment that can be handed down from the court to this man that will be adequate, given this horrific crime. May God bless the girls family and may He show mercy on this man's soul.

I hope they hang this sorry sack of manure! I have no feelings for anyone or anything that could do this to a small, helpless little girl. This guy is not a human being, he is an animal. I only hope that he will get some of the same treatment in the big house while awaiting his execution if it turns out that he did indeed do this!
