Grayson Commissioners put off decision about jail land deal
BY JERRIE WHITELEY
HERALD DEMOCRAT
SHERMAN -- Grayson County commissioners did not move any closer Monday to bringing a privately run jail to the county.
Commissioners met in executive session to discuss the 93 acres of land the county has optioned for a location for a new jail. They came out of the session and took no action on the land purchase.
Commissioners also tabled the request by Grayson County Sheriff Keith Gary to have the county pay for an attorney to look over the proposed agreement, when Gary is presented with one, between the county and the private company proposing to build the new jail.
Grayson County Judge Drue Bynum said he thinks the county should see an updated proposed contract between the county and that private company some time this week.
In addition, commissioners approved a request to reconsider a pay increase for constable of Precinct 3 in the 2010 budget. Commissioners said there is proof that Constable Todd Booher is doing the job he was elected to do. Booher will get the same 2 percent raise that other county employees stand to get. During the budget sessions, commissioners decided not to give the raise to the constables.
Commissioners also approved a request to allow a road cut on Brown Lane in Cedar Bayou for water service in Precinct 1. Additionally, they approved a request to solicit bids to repair the roofs on the Terminal building and building 5506 at the airport.

Some people are jumping ship because the further they got into this mess they discovered that all of the faults and liability. Others are jumping off the privatization ship because they recognize and hear the opposition to this ill planned loss of local control. Shame there is some who are just too arrogant with their power to say let the voters decide on the bond issue to build a privately operated jail. Proof of that is the County Judge and Commissioner's who will shove this down our throats just so they don't have to admit to making a mistake. Any way you cut it the masses are saying no.
Common Sense Should Prevail

I noticed ol' Magers jumping ship too. He and Smith both. They aren't sure any more which side the majority are on.

To: Keep an eye on our Tax dollars. The attorney used by Judge Bynum and the Commissioners was recommended to them by Sheriff Keith Gary. You might want to get your facts straight before you start speculating on what has transpired throughout this jail procedure. This is no longer about the jail it has become political. That is why certain people who started this ball rolling have now jumped ship.

Here's an idea on what to do with the land. Plant corn wheat, whatever and make the prisoners harvest it by hand.

Mr.Bancroft is a luckly man. His luck is so good he buys 93 point something acres. He gets a timber ag exemption and hardly pays any taxes. Now his land is the only place we can find to build a jail on. His land is valued, by the appraisal district, at $450,000 on this years appraisal. Now the price for his land is a little over $930,000. For a man that lives out of county he has done well. Now, he has capital gains the IRS is chopping their chops to get taxes, so he buys revenue bonds for a tax shelter. I wonder where he will buy revenue bonds from? If the private jail procedes, we will have revenue bonds for sale. Mr. Bancroft is so lucky. Don't you wish this happened to you and everyone?
Please someone follow the money, PLEASE!
Conflicts Abound : 8/26/2009
The attorney working for Judge Bynum and the Commissioner's is the hired legal gun used across this state to push for privatization of county jails. The County Judge and Commissioner's (except for Gene Short) has been hoodwinked into buying off on the information provided by the players who has a dollar to be made off this privatization project. This includes everyone from the engineer to the building contractor and the private prison operator. These schemers are all in cahoots to make a dollar from a project that the taxpayers of Grayson County could be left holding the bag. Think about it, there is currently a glut of available prison bed space in public and private jails. Why the push to continue this ill conceived project? Only Sheriff Gary and Commissioner Short have the common sense and integrity on dealing with this potential albatross that could be hung around the neck of the taxpayers.
