The search continues to find the next Sherman High School athletic director/football coach.
Twenty-seven applications have been received to replace Drew Young
as the school's 27th coach. Young retired June 1 to accept an
athletic-director only position with Durant Public Schools.
He officially ends his tenure with Sherman on Friday and begins his
duties in Durant, Okla. on July 20. The Bearcats finished 8-3 in 2008 but lost
their final two games of the season to rival Denison in the 110th
Battle of the Ax and to Richardson Pearce in the bi-district round of
the state playoffs.
"We're committed to this process and want to bring in the person
who's best for this athletic program," SISD school board President Dr.
John Hendricks said at Monday night's monthly board meeting. "We will
proceed to bring in who we feel is the best person for our students."
Young finished 37-29 in six years with the Bearcats, including a
10-win season in 2004 that included a state semifinals appearance along
with two other eight-win campaigns.
Two names prominently mentioned as possible replacements for Young
are Callisburg athletic director/head coach Jerry Bomar (who grew up in
Sherman) and current Baylor assistant and former Canton coach Gary
Kinne, who recently led Clovis West (Calif.) High School out of Fresno
to a 10-3 record.
Superintendent Dr. Al Hambrick said there was a target time of early
next month for a decision to be made but was cautious about making no
guarantees for it to take place.
Sherman is currently in the midst of 7-on-7 competition and can
begin fall practices Aug. 3 after not participating in spring practice.
Scrimmages are slated for Aug. 15 at Justin Northwest and Aug. 21 at
home against Wichita Falls before the season opener Aug. 28 at Lake
Dallas.
"We have 27 applicants we're currently screening, but the timing has
been and continues to be an issue," Hambrick said. "We have many
applicants who knew that going in, but many people are already
committed to their current school."
Public perception has the school board being nonchalant about the
situation with time being at such a premium, but Hendricks was adamant
about it not being the case.
"We do want the community to know the school board will not
participate in the search-committee process but will act in the end
with what is brought to us," Hendricks said. "Our priority is to let
the process play out, but we're not sitting in an ivory tower inside a
bubble not dealing with this. We realize how important this decision is
and want what is best for our students and the community."

Finding a Coach : 7/1/2009
In reading all these comments about hiring the new coach for Sherman, what really strikes me the most is the sad fact that most of the people are most upset that Sherman could not beat Denison, or Sherman doesn't the coaches that could produce a State Champion team. John Outlaw was a good coach, Ronnie Tipps was a good coach who took the Bearcats a little farther, and then Drew Young took them even farther. But that's not good enough for some people. Do you ever wonder why there are not any long tenured coaches in this town? Maybe they get fed up with the parents who gripe and complain and try to do their jobs for them. My question would be-- Why didn't YOU get an educational degree and be in their shoes? I get so tired of hearing people complaining on Friday nights about the sorry job the coaches are doing. Well, if you can do any better, get out there and do it. If any of these prospective coaches were to read this blog, I bet they would run from this town as fast as they could. Who wants to put up with this mess? We should let the people making this choice do their job and support these coaches. They are after all, human beings like you and I. (It should also be clarified to 100K who might be misleading people in his comment about the coach before Jerry Bomar at Grand Prairie. Ken Murray was with the GPISD a lot longer than the 4 years before Bomar. In fact, if you are much of a Bearcat fan, you will remember when Sherman played GP in 88 and 89. In 89, both teams were undefeated and GP won that game right here in Sherman. They both went on to win their districts and Sherman lost to Arlington Lamar and GP eventually lost to Marshall. I don't think the statistics printed were very evident of what Mr. Murray did in his tenure with GP.)

I would like to respond to some of the things I have read regarding parents who get mad. Parents are the ruin of all children's sports. There is a lot more to learn from sports than just being the best player. It's parents who keep their children upset because they don't get to play enough. I've seen it from games with 5 year olds up to chigh school. It's always the same. The child would not feel inferior if parents would just enjoy and keep their mouths shut. The child hears all the griping and name calling because their kid is not the star. Football, as all sports is about winning. Lots of people are depending on the wins to keep their jobs. It's not a popularity contest. If your kid has potential and ability, he will get more play time. Where is the "team work" disciplibe come in. If parents would encourage their kids and support their coaches we would not have all of the killings and shootings of teachers, coaches and yes even kids. Wise up parent. Enjoy the game and teach you kids to be team players. I don't know Mr. Bomar. I do know Mr. Kinne . Whoever gets the job needs the support of the parents. I'm talking positive support. Like mama says "if you can't say somethin nice keep it to yourselves". Mr. Kinne has set an example wherever he has been and has been an inspiration to every child he has come in contact with. He would be an assett to your staff and to your city. If Mr. Kinne is hired, get ready for a winning season.

ALL athletics : 6/30/2009
I think its interesting that when our district and community mentions SHS athletics, the only sport that actually is included in the discussion is football, and occasionally baseball. Isn't our school supposed to be interested in developing and achieving success in ALL our HS sports? The open position includes the title and duty of ATHLETIC director, yet when comparing the results and stats of previous and potential candidates, only football info is spewed. How about looking at what a candidate can achieve for ALL our athletes? Can that candidate oversee and direct (as the title implies) the success of ALL our athletic programs? As the parent of a non-football athlete, I believe my child is entitled to a competent, experienced, successful instructor (yes, one that actually instructs my child in how to be more competitive in her sports and expects her to earn her position) just as much as a football player. How many kids are we abandoning because their talent falls in some sport besides football? We have an unbelievable amount of talent and potential in our young students if our district would just provide them the same opportunities they provide football players. The success of ALL our athletes should be our goal as parents, teachers, and a community, regardless of whether they are a football player or a softball player, and regardless of their last name. Our district's mission statement is, "To ensure that EACH student is equipped to excel in our changing environment..." Our district has the responsibility to hire an athletic director that is a successful football coach, absolutely, that's where the money is. But also one who is firmly committed to developing all SHS athletics and increasing the scholarship offers for all our athletes (by expecting all his coaches to actively pursue and increase collegiate interest in their athletes, by expecting all his coaches to be involved in developing their program by consulting/assisting with our junior high sports). And, believe it or not, until our Piner students are given coaches who are qualified and committed to instructing our 7th and 8th graders, our students are always going to lag in competition. In these times of high dollar select sports where by the age of 13, kids have been competing at a high level for 4 or 5 years, we've got to work a little harder with our kids. Other schools in our district and in our area are developing talent early on, boys and girls, but Sherman is not. Until this attitude changes, we will always struggle to compete in our sports, no matter who is coaching the football team.

Sorry for the historical information mistake, as for Kinne it was the Guy Morris regime at Baylor instead of Art Briles. It certainly explains the move from Baylor. Great bio information below from "Baylor Bear." Some good luck could finally shine on Sherman. We are ready to embrace someone. Answer our prayers.

Yes, bond money is indeed earmarked for building and related projects but that has nothing to do with the non-bond money and how it is spent. SISD could trim the useless fat in the administration (plenty of it) and other places and pay a head coach a decent salary (and keep the other teachers and coaches as well instead of laying them off or coaxing their resignations). For starters, taxpayers shot down the TRE because they evidently did not like how they see THEIR money being spent by the SISD Admin. Secondly, go get the facts yourself and you will see that, in this rough economy, there are many more rollbacks failing than there are passing so, where are these teachers going to go? Oh well, soon it won't matter anyway, the way Obama is spending money (that we don't even have) all of the public schools will end up broke. When there are more takers than givers we are screwed and we are almost there. I think amnesty to a few million more illegals will help the situation though......NOT!!!

Kinne to Win : 6/29/2009
I'll disregard that Tipps rumor as it sounds too crazy to me. I certainly hope it's not true as we shouldn't fear some change. While this blog is likely 100% for entertainment purposes, it is educational for me as I am surprised there are some well-reasoned people like "sherman athletics 101" who are open to a continuation of the current regime. I like his points, but I lean the other way. I think a 56% win percentage should open things up to change. As far as the state of the rest of the athletic dept, yes McCulloch is a superstar and the baseball team has one of its most talented groups ever for another year, but it must be pointed out the "All-Sports" rankings came out today which rank all athletic programs on a point basis for all sports boys and girls for this past school year. Sherman finished 7th in our district out of 8. Next to last. This is numerical data, not an opinion. Is that really an athletic dept of which we should try to keep the status quo in place as much as possible by hiring from within? I get the feeling some people want to hire from within as some type of tribute to Drew Young and to validate the job he and his staff have done. That's no reason to base a hiring decision. Other than staying in the office while his team practiced, long before the heart attack, I didn't really have a big problem with Young but he should not be part of the equation. He's gone, and minds are strongly made up about his tenure one way or the other. The only thing that should matter is who is the best qualified candidate on the table right now, and I can't imagine anyone on the current staff could even come close if judged head-up on resume and experience. I do wish we knew more names than just Kinne and Bomar. SISD has always leaned heavily in hiring toward people in all areas that have a previous SISD connection, no offense Dr. Hambrick, but there are times we have to get outside that. With any statistics, you can interpret them any way you want to fit your argument but here they are: at 5A Grand Prairie from 96-03 Bomar went 4-6, 5-5, 6-4, 3-7, 5-5, 7-3, 3-7 and 6-4 for a total win percentage of 49%. Son Rhett was the QB the last 3 years, and the 6-4 senior year he broke his arm in week 8. I know what you are thinking - not enough wins, but be careful as that thinking lost us Bill Patterson from Garland Naaman Forest in 03 and all he did since then was win and win even though he had a short stick compared to Garland and South Garland due to their open enrollment polices. A anti-Bomar argument would be that he was a losing coach, but a pro-Bomar argument would be that with Grand Prairie's size and demographics against district opponents like Duncanville and Arlington Lamar it is very hard to be competitive. It must also be pointed out the guy Bomar replaced at Grand Prairie was 7-32-1 in the 4 years before Bomar arrived for a 21% win percentage, and the guy who came after Bomar has been 7-33 in 4 years also for a 21% win percentage. Perhaps Bomar turned water into wine there at GP, and if someone was down on a 49% win percentage remember Drew Young's was just 56%. And then there's Gary Kinne. Yeah, he's bounced around some but coaches do bounce around on their way up the chain. Those will be questions for the interview process. When you are a rising star opportunites come your way. I'm just speculating, but perhaps he leaves Canton for Baylor because his son is now in college and he gets the chance to try college coaching. Perhaps there was a personal connection or something, but he gets offered the Clovis West Calif job and decides he misses high school. Maybe now a lifelong Texas guy decides California isn't his cup of tea and here's a chance to come back. I don't know but his pedigree is a no-brainer. What has he done? You may know his 78% career win percentage (38-11), state championship as an assistant at 5A Mesquite, Division I assistant experience under Art Briles but do you know what happened last year? Look it up. Think Kinne is afraid of high expectations? He replaces a guy who was fired after a 9-4-1 season. Then he goes 10-3. You're thinking he lost in 3rd round of playoffs, right? No. In California, some classifications stop at a "sectional" championship which he won by going 3-0 in the playoffs so he won the highest championship they could win in the very first year. In winning 9 of last 10 beat their previously more succssful rival Clovis East once in regular season and again in a rematch in the sectional final. There's some research so perhaps that will keep the debate going, but if we do what it takes to get him this is a dream come true. We should be pushing the moving truck to Fresno. If there is any type of interim decision, then these kinds of debates will rage on every day for months and that would be terrible for everyone involved. This uncertainty is killing us all for a month, but imagine it going on for longer than an entire season. With all the returning starters this year the record will probably be good no matter what, but what about after that? Yes the Jeff McCulloch hire has been fantastic, but there are many examples of how risky it gets when you go down a coaching family tree and it gets diluted. You start with Jimmy Johnson and eventually you get from Dave Wannstedt to Butch Davis and finally down to Dave Campo. By the way, nice guy but no thanks to Randy Matthews also although that rumor may be off-base as well. The chance is there to have the best of both worlds, by hiring new leadership at the top and blending that with some of the solid assistants in place. I want to make it clear there are some very fine assistants here now, but we need a true leader at the top to bring it all together. We are ready to embrace someone. Answer our prayers.

Get a good coach and pay him? Hahahahahahah! Do you remember the good people of Sherman voted DOWN the TRE? You will get jack squat because you don´t want to pay for anything. And for those of you who say "What about the bond money? Looks like they wasted it!" Seriously? By law it is earmarked for building only, not operational costs. Get your facts straight, support the school system-teachers and approve the TRE next time or you are not going to have to worry about anything....including athletics or any other extra curricular activities because they will be gone! Not to mention the education of the kids will be in the crapper because the good teachers will leave.

Kinne : 6/28/2009
I can answer your questions about Kinne because I am a Baylor alumni & have followed his story for some time (actually since he was a standout linebacker at Baylor University). Kinne was the Defensive Coordinator at 5A Mesquite High School & helped guide them to a perfect season 15-0 State Championship. After a more than successful run at Mesquite, he took his first job as a Head Coach and Athletic Director at 3A Canton High School and led them to the playoffs his first year there. It was the first time since 1960 the team had been to the playoffs. He then led them to the State Regional Semifinals. After that season, he was awarded NATIONAL High School Coach of the Year. Baylor University then hired him to coach the linebackers. If you think about it, what high school head coach wouldn't leave a 3A high school job to coach in the Big 12? Also, what defensive coordinator wouldn't leave to become a head coach? Looks to me like Kinne only left jobs to better himself. Every job he took was a step up. Sounds pretty ambitious if you ask me. Unfortunately for Kinne, college jobs turn over every year. Guy Morris (the head coach at Baylor) was terminated & thus the entire staff lost their jobs, as goes in the world of college football. Kinne was then sought out by a 5A high school in California that is a top ranked school in the state for football. I was told he didn't look for that job, they conducted a national search & searched him out. Word of mouth is he turned it down because he didn't want to leave family in Teaxs, but after much persuasion, he took it. Looks to me like he made a pretty good choice . . . He won a state championship his 1st year there AFTER taking the job in July. For some of you that aren't informed on the potential candidates, Kinne proved this past football season that if Hambrick hires the right person, regardless of WHEN he is hired, anything is possible. Kinne is gold. I don't think he is desperate for a job as some of you like to imply, I just think he would like to get back to Texas. I think he knows Sherman is a great place & has unlimited potential . . . if we get a leader in place like Kinne to untap it.

My stance was give the guys on staff a chance IF they are the best fit. Sometimes the people already on site know exactly what is wrong and how to fix it...eliminate the bads and continue the goods. If they are not the best fit, then go outside, but to not consider them would be a great injustice and possibly overlooking the right guy. I also stand by the stance to give Hambrick support. Some bloggers don't like the last couple of hires and blame him, which by the way is inaccurate since he has never hired a football coach/AD during his tenure as the Superintendent of SISD. Sherman is a good place to be, just let people do their jobs and support them or say nothing at all. As for Bomar and Kinne, that seem to have the most support, does anyone have an idea why Kinne has been so many places in the last few years? It appears he does not stay anywhere very long, despite having some success? Does anyone know what Bomar's record was at 5A Grand Prairie with a 5 star Oklahoma quarterback recruit? I do not have the answers to those questions, but am curious how one travels so often and so far (Kinne) and how the other (Bomar) goes to a 2A job from a 5A job. As for being a staff member or board member, not a chance. I am a born and raised Bearcat supporter but not willing to make those kind of time sacrifices. Best of luck this week as the process gets a little more intense. Go Cats!

Choice #1. Those Parents that think that competition should decide who gets on the field, will want a Coach Jerry Bomar. ("Show em whatcha got son!") Choice #2. Parents that think their children can't compete and want to continue to decide who gets on the field, will want another guy. ("My poor baby!") Seems to me the only thing holding up Jerry's hiring is the parent's of choice #2. Note: Academics haven't been keeping our boys off the field, it's been adults making choices. I'll tell you this, I know we are getting tired of it. Tired of not seeing the best players on the field cause they get frustrated and quit. Make the right choice Sherman.

I am reading all of these posts and then I started getting mad. Knock the crap off! That ex Sherman Quarterback's name is Thor Long and we all know him and we all know what a talent he is and what Coach Bomar did with him. Let's not kid ourselves or be haters. The kid is a player and we knew that even when he was is elementary school. He's played with our boys for years and is still friends with our boys. He's a fine young man. I know and so do you that he was never given any shot because of all the a** kissing that goes on here. Not one of his receivers has the talent of our Sherman kids, but he got 3,000 or so yards with them. Think what he could have gotten with our boys...Dang! So please, don't mention of him in a bad way. It's not right. To those of you that did mention him in a good way, Thanks from me and the parents that know him, he's a great kid. This is about Bomar and we need a coach. That's it! Go Bearcats!

Sherman Athletics 101 : 6/27/2009
Sherman Athletics 101, which board/staff member are you? Regardless, I agree with most of what you say. Young has drawn fire for no reason! As you stated, he has a better record than most anyone in Sherman's athletic history. Sounds to me like some parents didn't get their way again. I guess they couldn't understand why their big-footed, acne-faced, no-hearted, cumbersome son couldn't be running back or linebacker. It's the same in these small towns like Whitewright and Bells. There are simply not enough "glamour" positions on the team to make every parent happy and feel a part of the wheel. It's all due to the "me, me, me" society that we have become. Too bad SISD can't hire Obama for the head coaching position. He is the only one I can think of who would make sure that EVERYONE got to be quarterback, running back, etc. Then we could ALL feel good about ourselves and our kids (of course we wouldn't win a single game but it would be "fair" to everyone!). Good luck to Drew Young and I hope Hambrick disregards about 98% of the sewage that is spewing from the parent's mouths right now regarding what he "should" do!
Just Say It
Uneducated Bloggers : 6/26/2009
Let me say that if people knew facts, understood school finance, and and were not speculating on this blog I would not have anything to humor me each day. Get the facts. Drew Young retired from Sherman, he did not resign. Therefore Sherman had no right to stop him nor could they even if he had resigned before mid July when contracts lock. Coach Young had the opportunity to leave Sherman, draw Texas retirement and get paid a full salary in Oklahoma. I believe that means he will be making about 30k more per year to do half as much work since he will only be AD and not the football coach. So, according to some bloggers, he is a bad guy at an age of about 55 coming off a heart attack to leave on June 1 and take care of himself and his family. Only "unhappy green" would find something wrong with that. Now that we have that straight, let us again review his body of work...furthest play-off run in school history (surpassing Outlaw, Tipps, GA Moore, and Hudspedth) and an 8-3 record this past year with wins against what people are calling sub par Frisco schools that mind you he did not choose to schedule but were dealt to him by the UIL. The only losses came to teams who went 2 or more rounds in the playoffs including extremely talented Denison and Rockwall Heath. So, maybe he was a bad AD?? Wrong again...this year the football team, basketball team, and baseball teams all cracked the top 20 rankings for class 4A in the state of Texas. I am going to make a guess that no other Sherman AD can put that on their resume either. So that only leaves losing to Denison. If recent success against a rival was the only measure of success, OU would have fired Switzer early on, Denison would have fired Bob Brown early on, and Texas would have fired Mack Brown early on. I think hanging on to and backing those coaches after early failure turned out good for each program either winning or making it to multiple championship games. Heck, if that is the only measure of success lets assign Sherman's boys and girls basketball coaches to take over the football program because Denison rarely wins on the hardwood from what I see in the paper. I hope people see the falacy and humor in this thinking. Sherman has good coaches on staff that coach multiple sports. Several have been hired from "within" i.e. see the state ranked baketball and baseball programs from last year. Do not be afraid to go within there are excellent coaches already on staff that some people are already trying to run out of town on this website. Instead of complaining, why don't we get out and show some support for the administration. Vote yes for TRE and maybe we could pay a head coach more instead of cutting multiple coaching positions and reducing staffing for next year. I know what you are thinking, they got all this money for new facilities why can't they pay?? Let me direct you to the school board meeting where you can get educated and learn about school finance since people do not understand why certain money can not be spent on certain things. Here is an idea! Join the Athletic Booster Club at Sherman for a small amount and spend some time and money making things better instead of complaining. Here is another one. Go out and support these kids at 7 on 7 and lifting weights every day. Come to the games early and stay late supporting them, not booing and questioning the staff. In closing bloggers of Sherman, stay uneducated and keep me humored, but do not sell coach Young, his staff, the SISD, and especially the kids short by making hasty assumptions on something you do not understand. Dr. Hambrick will get it right. He is taking time and as always he will be thorough with his research. Go Cats!

Success with a program : 6/26/2009
THIS is about building a PROGRAM. FOOTBALL PROGRAMS are succrssful not year to year planning. You look at all successful teams and they have a program in place that also includes the support of all the parents and kids from all the classes. This Program must start from the Junior High and go all the way through with everybody supporting it. That is something we have had trouble with in Sherman for years because it is always about my "Little Johnny". There are no "Little Johnnys" in places like Celina, their PROGRAM keeps them successful every year. We must get someone in here that will build a PROGRAM and we must all support that PROGRAM. Believe it or not but academics can also be very successful within a PROGRAM for all you EDUCATION FIRST people they actually go hand in hand.
It is time
Coach Situation : 6/26/2009
Well I'll first state that I'm not from Sherman, I have not connections to Sherman and the only thing I see of the Sherman Bearcats are on KXII highlights. I'm from SE Grayson County, Mountain Springs area, my kids went to school at Pilot Point. Waiting so long to hire a coach is a big mistake. First off if I was Sherman I wouldn't have accepted Mr. Young's resignation so late in the year. If anyone is doing a disservice to Sherman ISD, Sherman High School, football team and athletic department it's him. Contracts are renewed in the Spring time, if he knew that he was going to be interested in leaving back in March he should have said something then so that the School Board would have known that he was at least looking and so they wouldn't be slammed with this. In most cases when a coach leaves this late in the year a replacement from the current staff is usually promoted because THAT'S who was with the team during spring practice, etc. Hiring a coach this late in the summer is not good for the program. The coach is more than likely stuck with coaches who he doesn't know, has never worked with and hasn't had a chance to get "his guys" in there. ALSO it's rough on the kids because they don't know who the coach is. Most of the time when a new coach is hired, they're hired in March/April where they have most of or half of the Spring Semester to get to know the kids, set the summer workout program, 7 on 7, etc. Whoever they hire whether it be Bomar, Kinne or anyone else for that matter, the longer they wait the worse they're hurting the program. It's almost June 26th....Football workouts start in August people.

To: Get It Done : 6/26/2009
Get It Done, your kid is obviously a senior so, if I read this correctly, let's hire from within for a 1-year contract so it doesn't "sacrifice" your senior but, if he doesn't work out, THEN we can hire a new AD and sacrifice next years seniors, right? What about the parents who have juniors in high school now? It's so nice that you are willing to "sacrifice" their kids but not your own! The change has to come sometime and NOW is the time - not go through this again in another year! Again, parents as well as the kids are 100% self-centered and self-serving with little or no regard to other parents or their kids!

I undertstand your concern "varsity parent/get it done", but I definitely wouldn't agree with hiring from within. I wouldn't worry about offensive/defensive terminology and scheme differences. Most likely anyone coming in would still run the 4-wide spread offense (Kinne or Bomar would), and coaches are smart enough to blend terminologies to teach things quickly. I think hiring from within would jeopardize the current season even more, and definitely in the future. With the large amount of returning starters, and some of the weak opponents on the schedule, the record should be pretty good no matter who coaches. If you go a one year "interim" coach currently on the staff and they have a decent record which they likely would, then they are hired permanently and the cycle continues. A new coach could probably bring at least 2-3 coaches with him and blend with the current guys just fine. Even under optimal conditions we would get more qualified applicants, but someone with the pedigree of Gary Joe Kinne would likely still be at the top of the list, and the beauty is since he's coming from California he wouldn't have a large group of guys he had to bring with him. I think, and hope, the process is still moving and we should know in a couple of weeks. No need to panic. Fresh start.

Boys have qualified for 7 on 7 Tournament using current offense and defense. We went through the spring with same offense and defense. Boys have built relationships with coaches and coaches with boys. To hire someone other then a coach on staff at this time would be hazardous and the sr class would be sacrificed for the future. The list of Coaches are not that impressive not the list we would have gotten in February for sure. Not the list we will get next February. So a new Coach is going to come in put a new Offense and Defense in hire new coord. and build relationships with the boys and rearrange coaches. I realize some might need to be rearranged just kind of late to be doing it. WE should hire from within with a one year contract I know of 2 coaches that could fill the postion on staff. After that year if he has done a great job lets offer him a 2 year contract if not let open it up and see who all we get then. I have the best interest of the Sr class in my mind just need some help. I am not one to talk a lot and do not name I am just ready to move forward fast things seem to be at a stand still and no one is pointing the ship in any direction. Anyone support or am I way out in right field.

Here is an idea C Rogers of Snyder has Grayson County ties. All sports have been very successful in Snyder Baseball State Champs 4 or 5 Golf State Champions and a lot of success n Track. 70-30 record and 5 Dist Championships in 8 years. 2 State Semi finals were beat by Celina on 2007. He is kin to me probably what makes him successful. 13 or 14 playoff wins there were 5 prior playoff wins to his arrival. He was a finalist for Midland Lee and Stephenville job. Not sure he would come just a thought would like to see him back in the area..

Should I Be Shcoked? : 6/26/2009
Hmmm. I am 100% in favor of hiring the best AD possible for SISD, BUT, it appears that maybe some of you parents should be up there "helping" the new coach since you appear to know more about athletics than most of the coaches do. If your emotions concerning your kids education was half of what it is concerning hiring a new coach, maybe your kids could read and write and make it in college somwhere. Just the fact that a new coach can come in and fire all of the current coaches - without regard to their educational contributions - is testament to society's misguided priorities. High schools are turning out a bunch of whiny, helpless, self-centered, dependent morons and it is due in very large part to the parents. Many (not all) of the parents couldn't care less if their kid excelled academically as long as he/she could be a pitcher, star forward, running back or on a "state-bound" athletic team. Get your priorities right folks, think about what will really matter for your kids 10, 20, 30 years from now and quit trying to live out your childhood fantasies through them!

don't screw this up big al : 6/25/2009
Don't be surprised if the man making 162K (superintendent) screws this hiring up. Don’t know either coach. But what I’ve read and heard I think I would want Kinne. The timing of this resignation does cut down on real up and coming coaches from applying. Most coaches have staff from there present school who they would like to bring with them. New guy has to come in and evaluate the current staff and see if the current staff fits his needs. Also who is leading the summer program? Lots of guys on this staff are from Oklahoma sometimes they don’t jive with Texas coaches. Because of the timing and the lack of time I say look for the hire to come from within i.e. Coach Heath. Coach Heath would make a great hire. Don’t screw this up Big Al, get someone in soon, practice begins in only 39 days.

It really seems funny that Bomar is being promoted so big time. How many district titles did he win at Grand Prairie? NONE, and that was in about 7 years and with his Blue-Chip athlete son. He touted that he was going to turn their program around and be a winner. Well, he didn't! It has now taken him how many seasons to finally make a play-off spot at Callisburg? SHS may want to rethink Bomar for the job.

Very well said Needs to be $100K or More. If we are not going to try and compete financially for a good coach then don't waste time or money!

"Bearcat Fan" I'll admit Bomar's work at Class 5A Grand Prairie is what I'm more familiar with. Remember that from a public-relations standpoint I don't think anyone should put all of the eggs in one basket by focusing solely on one candidate, as that's how a program goes from their #1 candidate to #5 or lower when the others pull out. I'm excited about both of Kinne and Bomar, and who knows what other names we aren't aware of. I think it is inappropriate to critique a current student, as the young Callisburg QB is having a great career. I definitely don't think any player could be fully judged at the young age of 8th-9th grade, and I'm hopeful that under a new regime we will gain more move-ins than losing move-outs. "Rip-off" and "Citizen", I agree that it is unfortunate in our society that vital professions such as teachers, policemen and fireman and many more are low-paying, but the reality is we live in an employment world of supply and demand. Most coaches earn just a small stipend above the normal teacher pay, and only a select few head coaches rise to the level to get the larger payday. It's probably not right that on any college campus the highest paid employees are the football and basketball coach, but that's the economic reality. In accouncing OU's Bob Stoops' raise to an avg of $3.675 million per year, the university president stated yesterday essentially that "yes, coaching salaries are too high but we didn't create the marketplace." We are ready to embrace someone. Answer our prayers.

Go for Kinne : 6/25/2009
I think Kinne would be a better fit than Bomar. And whoever said that Bomar instantly turned around Callisburg with the help of an ex-Sherman QB is way off. The so called ex-Sherman QB had his chance to show what he could do and failed, that's why he went to Callisburg. Sherman and Callisburg two totally different shows. Big school vs little school. My grandmother could play @ Callisburg. Give me a break!

I have a REAL problem with AD's making that much money when teachers are the ones truly putting their necks on the line. Teacher work their hardest to get kids where they need to be academically (the reason we are in school), and you have a AD that makes more than 100,000 a year. Give them a stipend for coaching, but not 62,000 more! That statement proves that athletics mean more than academics.

100,000 or more ??? When we pay teachers a starting salary of 38,000 you got to be kidding me. For crying out loud they don't even teach a class. I have nothing against paying well but until we can pay teachers a decent salary 100,000 is out of line.

Gary Kinne : 6/23/2009
What an wonderful opportunity to be able to get Gary Kinne as the football coach for Sherman. He has excellent leadership and has proven himself as a man with integrity. He has an excellant record with every football team he has coached. Dont miss this chance for Sherman High School. We need a man like Gary for his skills and leadership.

Head Coach : 6/23/2009
Sherman has an opportunity to take a huge step foward by hiring Coach Kinne. He has a proven winning resume and has shown the ability to improve a team's peformance over a short period of time. He is the type of Coach that Sherman High needs at this time.

Head Coach Sherman : 6/23/2009
Gary Joe Kinne has been successful at every stop in his coaching career, including his time as an assistant at Baylor. He took Canton to the playoffs, and won a state championship in their division in California. You would be hard pressed to find a better coach for Sherman Football.

Both names sound pretty good : 6/23/2009
Both Coach Kinne and Jerry Bomar sound like excellent candidates. I know of Coach Kinne only by reputation, but I know Coach Bomar personally. I know he has the work ethics and tenacity to do a great job in SISD. He has also done an excellent job where ever he has worked. Looks like the future could be bright in Sherman.

I'm optimistic if we can just see this through. I like Hambrick's and the school board's comments. Would be very pleased with either Gary Joe Kinne or Jerry Bomar. Kinne has had extreme success at both of his head coaching stops at Canton and in California, and has always been around successful programs. That's a pretty big-name coach. Bomar would also be great as he can flat-out coach. Ignore any people who claim they knew him 35 years ago and didn't like him, as I'm excited he's applied again. He did a fantastic job keeping Grand Prairie competitive as their student body demographics leave them very undermanned in the district they are in, and he's instantly turned Callisburg around with the help of an ex-Sherman QB. Here's some bio info on Kinne although it doesn't include the 10-3 info last year in California: Former Baylor linebacker and Canton (Texas) High School athletic director and head football coach Gary Joe Kinne begins his first season as the Baylor Bears' linebackers coach. Recently selected as the 2005 Adams USA National Head Coach of the Year, Kinne guided Canton to a 12-2 record and the regional finals of the 2005 Class 3A playoffs. In addition to the national award, bestowed upon the nation's top prep football coach that has not only won on the field but who also serves as a positive influence to America's youth, Kinne was also named both the 2005 Fox Sports Southwest State Class 3A Coach of the Year and the District 15-3A Coach of the Year after recovering from an April, 2005 gun shot wound to guide the Eagles to a school-record 12 victories. His Canton coaching staff was also honored as the 2005 15-3A Staff of the Year. Canton finished 8-4 and advanced to the second round of the 2003 state playoffs in Kinne's rookie season as head coach, then posted an 8-2 record in 2004 but just missed the playoffs after losing a playoff berth on a district tie-breaker. All-told, he fashioned a 28-8 (.778) three-year record on the Eagles' sideline and led his squad to a pair of playoff appearances. Don't know any other candidates, but those are two good ones. Come on Hambrick and school board, reel them in! Pay what it takes! We're ready to embrace someone. Answer our prayers.
