What is a free press really

Mr. Bill Cowan of Sherman wrote a letter to the editor expressing his displeasure about a political cartoon featuring former Alaska governor and Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Since the letter's debut this weekend, there have been 15 comments about the letter, some agreeing with the author, and some not.

I've worked in the newspaper business long enough to know that readers believe newspapers support the opposite of what they believe in. If they are a Republican, then we're a liberal rag; if they are Democrat, we're a conservative rag.

One person commented that we should change our name from the Herald Democrat to the Herald Republican, even though the Democrat part of our name comes from the Sherman Democrat, which existed for many, many years. I wonder what the reader would ask the Quincy (Ill.) Herald Whig to do, since there has not been a Whig party for a very long time.

What readers deserve is a free press, which the first amendment of the Constitution guarantees us, and that is vital to our existence as a nation. That means that readers will be exposed to news and commentary (a political cartoon is a form of commentary) that will be contrary to their ideas. And it also means that readers have the ability to respond, as Mr. Cowan did, with his rebuttal to what the cartoonist was trying to express. While Mr. Cowan and the cartoonist disagreed, they were allowed to express their opinions in a free press -- in this case a newspaper -- and that doesn't happen in many other countries on this earth.

Joe the Fake : 1/20/2010
Joe was a creation of the McCain folks that fell straight out of Obama's pocket. A few short weeks after Joe's "unveiling" it was shown that Joe was a big, non, tax cheat. Thus, what started as a good idea wound up being a shot to the big toe in the political race. Harry Reid is no better than the Tom Delay, Kenneth Lay, or Newt Gingrich. Lets not forget the ethics charges brought against Newt Gingrich that cost him the speaker's job. (320+votes for, less than 30 against.)
Texas has one party. It's Republican, the Democratic party has little support outside of the metropolitan areas. Thus, the people get one opinion. Republican! If folks want to do something about Harry Reid they should try to convince his home district of "hades" that they shouldn't support Mr. Reid. This isn't very likely because I suspect they like the perks of having their very own Sam Rayburn.
I don't consider unions or welfare a problem in our country. I pay tons of taxes and God has always blessed my family well enough to provide a means to keep paying.
What I do consider the problem to be is the "Bohemian Grove" Union of rich fat cats. These people put together trillions of dollars in tax free trusts that quietly manipulate the gun toting bubbas like myself to raise (Mc)Cain and to do their bidding. My fellow bubbas pride themselves on being anti-union even though their very own families could really use a raise. The funny thing is the rich have their unions and they are called "Country Clubs." The "union dues" are payed to PAC's that seek tax breaks for the rich.
During the years that Texas had a Democratic state the taxes on the wealthy ran between 75 and 90+% at the top bracket.
Now taxes for the rich are within 10 percent of the tax rate paid by the middle class.
I can have slave labor in China produce products for sale in the U.S.A. and I will get taxed at the 35% rate. Or, I can own a business in the U.S.A. that produces American products for purchase by Americans and I will still pay taxes at the 35% rate.
Either the guy selling Chinese garbage should be taxed at the 90% rate or just tax us both at that rate to even the playing field. Better yet, just tax all of the money that was made running up the real estate market, stock market, and energy markets.
I meet all of the standards required to be a Republican. Except for one...

Blind Faith

Free Press : 1/19/2010
The problem of late is we don't have a "free press" that asks tough questions of politicians. When Obama said he wanted to "fundamentally transform the U.S.A", no one asked him what he meant. He said he would use public monies if McCain would. McCain did, Obama did not and raised unbelievable sums. It wasn't fair and no one in the press took him to task. He said he wanted to "redistribute the wealth" to Joe the Plumber and also said similar things addressing our Constitution. Again, no one asked the tough questions. Our country is doomed if questions are not asked of both sides of the political spectrum. I'm not talking about nitpicking, I talking about the big issues. Where are you Free Press on the recent bribes by Harry Reid? That goes against everything I learned growing up in Denison.
