Waterloo Pool story generates comments
During the past week, a story about the Denison City Council not appropriating some funds for a portable slide and inflatable toys for Waterloo Pool generated the most interesting comments.
Waterloo Pool started out as an outdoor pool, but was later covered to make it a year-round facility.
After having attended more than a few birthday parties there, I'd have to agree with those commenting that the city needs to take the roof off the pool. Waterloo Pool has noise, temperature and humidity problems related to the enclosure. And the facility does have its own, unique odor.
While the council did appropriate funds to purchase chairs and lockers, there is a bigger question that remains. Is Waterloo Pool nearing the end of its life?
Judging from the comments, people want more than the traditional city pool. And the citizens of Denison should get what they want, as long as they are willing to pay for it.
Good news on the jobs front
The jobless rate in Sherman-Denison fell to 8.2 percent in November according to statistics released Friday by the Texas Workforce Commission. The area's unemployment rate was 8.5 percent in October, but is still higher than the state's unemployment rate of 8 percent. This is the first decrease in unemployment figures in 16 months.
License plate search
One of our letters to the editor asked why couldn't a person's Christian faith be displayed on a license plate? A quick search of the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles Web site showed we can order God Bless Texas, God Bless America, or Knights of Columbus license plates. The Knights of Columbus plates read, "One nation under God."
Happy holidays
As we near the homestretch of the Christmas season and prepare to celebrate the end of the decade, remember to stop, relax and enjoy... Then let's get armed with a new set of resolutions and have a great 2010.

Baseball Fields : 1/5/2010
I do agree that more baseball fields are needed for practicing and playing on. Unfortunately, I don't believe that any teams were locked out from using the fields at anytime. I know that the Little League as well as Pony League each have to go before the Denison Parks and Recreation board to reserve the fields at Waterloo Park and Munson Park. This has to be done every year in December and September. The reservations for September are if the specific league is going to have a fall ball league or is trying to do some field maintenance do to the wear and tear that occurs on the fields during the spring season. The Little League has approximately 350+ kids that play baseball which equals out to 26 teams in the Spring season. They only have the 2 Waterloo fields to utilize for games which are also used for practicing along with one field at Munson Park (this field is only available to the league a few days a week since it is also shared with the Pony League teams). Games are played EVERYDAY of the week except Sundays. As you can imagine there is alot of wear and tear that goes on. The Little League maintains the Waterloo Baseball fields year round and is PROUD to do this for its youth. The fields this past fall were used by several fall ball teams that participated in the Sherman Fall program since Denison did not have one. These teams were not denied access to these fields - in fact they were allowed to use the fields throughout the fall season. I know this because my son played on one team and a friend of mine as son who played on another team. Both of the teams practiced on these fields. Some teams practiced when it rained and caused big ruts on the field and did not offer to help repair the damages that they caused. Over the past 4-5 years the Denison Little League has made vast improvements to the facility. They have built a new concession stand with a press box and meeting room above it. The bathrooms were just recently remodeled this past season. The fields have never looked better. Let me remind you that the Denison Little League is a non profit organization and solely relies on grants and donations in order to keep this program going for our youth. Yes there is a registration fee for those that can afford to pay this amount but the League also provides a scholarship fund for its youth that can't afford it. There were approximately 35+ kids that played baseball on scholarship this year alone. I know this because I researched it along with every other statement that I have made. I am proud of what these volunteers have accomplished and what they have created for our youth here in Denison. They put in countless hours that takes away time from their families but do it for our youth with no complaints.

Man, That would be awesome, That park is old and dirty and the concession stand served molded hot dog buns to my daughter. Nice time for a change. I hope some new fields are built. Denison needs to upgrade for the future. This is why it's never good for a city to have one League to play. The part about kids being lock out is obsurd. Whoever is doing this to kids should be ashamed.. Going to Sherman..

I agree with you that Denison needs practice fields for the youth of the town. It is unfortunate that the Denison LL has locked kids out of the opportunity to practice at Waterloo. I have heard of a developer who has the land to build a four field complex around Loy Lake and 75 area. That would be great if it happens. The new hospital is going to generate buiding all along the 75 cooridor. Great location for more fields..Dixie League would be nice.. I hope it happens, My kids will sign-up for sure..

First Of all, Dirt is easier to Replace than kids!!
How about funding some areas for baseball practice fields or upgrades to old fields. for the youth of the city. The Denison Little League has locked all teams out from practicing at Waterloo Baseball Fields except a Select team With the blessing of the Denison Little League Board of Backstabbers and the the City of Denison, A team Not affiliated with The city or the little League. They won't admit it but it's true. Everyone else has been locked out!. We need practice fields, Not a playground at the pool. Kids are leaving Denison to play in Sherman, Pottsboro, ElseWhere. Keep ignoring this issue and there won't be enough kids to have a League. Build some fields!!! or open Waterloo Baseball Fields for open practices for everyone.. Not a Select Few.
