Updated national ranking on Jones

In the last two months there hasn't been any action on a high school football field but Rivals.com doesn't just take into account on-the-field performance when rating the top players in the country.

When the website released its first rankings of the top 250 players in the Class of 2010, Denison running back D.J. Jones clocked in as the 181st-ranked player in the country.

Rivals released an updated list on Wednesday and Jones dropped 11 spots to No. 192, one spot behind Denton Ryan quarterback Scotty Young, who dropped from No. 179. McKinney quarterback Zach Lee tumbled from 154 to 175. All rankings are subjective of course, but the overall sense is that Jones dropped because he was jumped by players previously off the radar.

Jones, a four-star recruit, remains the third-best running back in the state of Texas, behind Temple's Lache Seastrunk, who stayed at No. 2, and Houston Aldine's Dontae Williams, who dropped from 104 to 116.

In terms of overall Texas recruits, on the national list he sits as the 29th-best player but on the Texas-based site, The Old Coach, he will be one of the top 25 players. The Old Coach has released its Texas list from 26 to 100 and Jones has yet to be seen.

By position, Jones remained as the 22nd best running back in the country. But based on production among those runners, Jones at the top of the list. Out of all the top junior tailbacks in the country, only Cayuga's Traylon Shead -- who is the fourth-ranked Texas runner at No. 221 -- Deontae Cooper of Perris (Calif.) and Ricky Seale of Escondido (Calif.) ran for more yards than Jones' 2,646. Shead had 3,504, Cooper had 2,902 and Seale had 2,670. Jones' yard-per-carry average was better than Shead and Cooper's. In terms of rushing touchdowns, only Shead (52) and Cooper (42) reached the end zone more than the 35 times Jones crossed the goal line.

Denison started spring football on Monday and Jones is currently healing from wrist surgery.

By last name, he is the seventh-ranked Jones in the country.

Among the offers he currently holds are from Arkansas, Baylor, Florida, Kansas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and SMU.

Rivals is soooo subjective. : 5/6/2009
He dropped because of others attending and performing well at camps. He attended a camp at TCU and from reports, didn't impress. I am a believer of showing it on the field...Rivals will update again several times throughout the season. If he has a year like last year, he will move up.
