LIVE BLOG -- State Track Meet, Day 2

I am looking live at a mostly empty Myers Stadium as fans begin to trickle in for the second and final day of the state track meet. For you, the local reader, today is a majority of 3A and 1A competition with the 5A big boys and girls later this evening. But I will be spending half my day here and the other half over at McCombs Field to see if Celina can win its first softball title.

But I will begin my day by watching the man, the myth, the legend that is Whitesboro senior Hayden Baillio in his first event of the day, the discus. He is the defending 3A state champ and is in line to set a classification record.

Well so much for a record but it was another gold-medal winning performance for Hayden Baillio in the 3A discus. The Whitesboro senior won with a throw of 186 feet and one inch. But what is even more impressive is that his worst throw -- 172-10 -- would have won the event by more than four feet. Van Alstyne's Shane Jones was in position for a medal behind Baillio after his regional performance but fouled on his first three attempts to knock him out of the competition.

Bonham senior Michael Johnson was unable to advance into the top four of the 3A high jump. All eight jumpers successfully cleared 6-2 and 6-4 but Johnson was part of the field unable to get over cleanly at six feet, six inches.

Whitesboro freshman Courtney Davis was a surprise winner in the 3A high jump. She set a school record and personal best -- she had the old mark -- with a leap of 5-foot-7. She actually won the title by clearing 5-5 when the final two competitors missed on all three attempts.

Bonham's Dustin Ingold was eighth in the 3A 100 meters.

That's it for me from the track meet. I'll be at McCombs Stadium for the 3A title game between Celina and Needville. But check back for the afternoon results, which I am having delievered to me by carrier ferret.

My carrier ferret tells my that Hayden Baillio won a second gold by defending his 3A shot put title. He finishes his career with five gold medals, two each the past two years, and a silver. I will post the numbers when I get them. UPDATE: The carrier ferret comes through again. Baillio won with a Class 3A state meet record of 68 feet, seven and a quarter inches. He bettered the previous mark, set in 1978, by exactly one foot. Celina's Jordan Roos took the bronze with a third-place toss of 55 feet, three and three quarters inches.

The Collinsville 1,600 boys relay team of Scott Ragsdale, Mitch Lawdermilk, Ethan Williams and Chris Carney came into the state meet as the team to beat with the best qualifying time. The Pirates leave as 1A champions in the event after winning in a time of 3:23.50 -- better than a second in front of Tolar.

Speaking of Pirates, Coby Ragsdale, Scott's cousin, finished seventh after a photo finish broke a tie for sixth with New Deal's Logan Jackson. Both ran a posted 22.80 but Jackson was listed at 22.7932 and Ragsdale at 22.7962.

Anna's Gabrielle Curiel was eighth in the 2A 200 with a time of 26 seconds.

That should wrap up a fun and exciting weekend down Austin way. Thanks for tuning in to the updates on both blogs.
