Game Recap -- Denison at Frisco Centennial
Records are made to be broken and the way Denison has approached the last five weeks in district, it seems like the Yellow Jackets are trying to rewrite the record book every time out, which is amazing because they don't have it on the sideline, they just go out and play and down goes this record, down goes another. The 56-17 victory over Frisco Centennial was just par for the course in this fashion -- pile up a bunch of first-half points and send us media types scrambling to see what's there when the scoreboard stops rolling.
It was over when -- Jimmay Mundine made his third touchdown catch of the first half, a 71-yard catch and run that was aided by a timely block from Tyler Jennings along the right sideline at the Centennial 30 as Mundine cut back towards the end zone. The score came three plays after the Jackets blocked a 30-yard field goal attempt and put Denison ahead 35-10 with 6:02 left in the second quarter.
It was really over when -- D.J. Jones had his second touchdown of the night, a five-yard run with 1:26 left in the first half. The touchdown gave Denison a 42-10 lead, which was big because Centennial scored a minute later, but it also made the Jackets six-for-six on touchdown drives in the opening half. Dustin Beard had a 38-yard catch into Titan territory and Jones finished off the seven-play drive.
Player of the Game -- For the second straight week these two are joined at the hip: Jordan Taylor and Mundine. What the quarterback and tight end have done the past two weeks is simply outstanding and the effort against Centennial was the pinnacle so far. Taylor was 10-of-13 (two of the incompletions were drops) for 298 yards and five touchdowns while Mundine was his go-to guy again, catching five passes for 191 yards and four touchdowns. Keep in mind that all this was accomplished midway through the third quarter before they were done for the evening. Here are all the records -- Taylor set single-game records for yards and touchdowns while become the all-time leader in both categories as well as setting the single-season record for touchdown passes (he now has 16, the old record was 15) and the only major passing category Taylor doesn't own is passing yards in a season and he needs only 25 against Sherman this week to hold that mark while Mundine set a single-game record for TD catches and was six yards from breaking the single-game record in that category. Over the past two games, Mundine has caught eight passes for seven touchdowns and 337 yards while Taylor is 15-of-21 for 461 yards and eight touchdowns with no interceptions.
Play of the Game -- When you talk about blocking on a screen pass, what the Jackets came up with on Jones' 57-yard touchdown catch with 6:44 left in the first quarter is exactly how you draw it up. Facing third-and-10 after a pair of plays gained nothing, Denison saw that Centennial was going to blitz and the Titans brought an extra linebacker, which played perfectly into the call. Richard McKinney sealed the cornerback on the outside, Corbin Boettger picked off the safety to open the alley and Connor Counce ended up as the lead blocker since that extra linebacker blitzed. Mundine, Dustin Beard, Cody Reeves and Kyle Galyon all took care of Titans downfield and Jones, who made the catch in the left flat, was untouched on the way to the end zone for a 14-0 lead. Perfect execution.
The good -- Rolling, rolling, rolling, that Denison offense keeps on rolling along, this time to the tune of 613 total yards. The Jackets only first-half possession without a touchdown came with less than 20 seconds left in the half and the first-teamers scored on seven of nine series. Denison's second-half defense was stout again, despite facing a majority of starters for the second straight week. The two game second half total, which is four quarters -- 0 points and 75 yards on 44 plays (that's less than two yards per play). There were also turnovers on back-to-back plays, a fumble recovery by Cory Newton and an interception by Darian Springfield. Special teams in the blocking department as the Jackets block another field goal attempt, this one by Jacob Marshall.
The bad -- I think I might start copy and pasting this section. There was the obligatory long kickoff return in the first half. There were 12 penalties for 110 yards, including a pair of personal fouls on one play and the fact that Centennial's final scoring drive had more Denison penalty yards (40) than those yards gained by the Titans (22). Aaron Morrison was ejected for throwing a punch. You can't do stuff like that even if you are provoked and I think there were several examples of provocation throughout.
District dish -- Well every Texoma fan gets their wish as Denison and Sherman will square off in the 111th Battle of the Ax with the winner gaining the district title, the loser relegated to second place and being ax-less. Sherman hung on against McKinney 26-23, Liberty took down Wakeland 49-21 and McKinney North rallied for a 21-17 victory over Frisco in a Thursday extravaganza. Both Sherman and Denison have already clinched playoff spots with the Jackets the top seed in Division II and the Bearcats the top seed in Division I. Liberty clinches with its win over Wakeland (Wakeland would have clinched with a win over Liberty) because Liberty will be one of the two to make it in the event of a three-way tie. Now Liberty plays McKinney and Wakeland, which plays McKinney North, needs a Liberty win to get in. Even if Wakeland loses, it can get in with a McKinney loss via a head-to-head tiebreaker over the Lions. If Wakeland, Liberty and McKinney all finish at 4-3, Liberty and McKinney advance on point differential. Denison's bi-district opponent will be Richardson Pearce. Pearce won against Greenville and that along with Rockwall's loss to Highland Park sealed the match-up, which will be Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Pizza Hut Park.
Stinging stats of the week -- It was Denison's 14th straight district victory, which is the second-longest streak in school history behind only a 17-game stretch from 1994-98...The Jackets now have 20 wins over the last two seasons, the eighth time that has happened in school history. The others are 1984-85, 1995-96 and 1996-97 (29), 1994-95 (25), 1997-98 (21), 1987-88 and 1988-89 (20)...Denison has run for at least 300 yards in each of the last five games and six of the last seven...Denison has scored 409 points through nine games (45.4 per game), which is second only to last season and 1997 (both 445 points/49.3 per contest) through the first nine games of a season...Mundine musings: He has caught at least three passes in all nine games this season. He is two touchdown catches from setting the single-season mark, Warren Dade had 13 in 1990. The 12 touchdowns are tied for second in a career. He became the fifth Jacket with 800 career receiving yards. His 733 yards this season is the fourth-best season total, his 36 catches this year ties for fifth most in a season. His last two weeks are two of the top six single-game receiving performances in school history...Jones passed Chris Robertson (4,504) on his first run of the game for second all-time on the Denison rushing list. Jones now has 4,655 yards, which is 564 yards from surpassing Corey Robertson for the top spot....It was Jones' 22nd 100-yard game, which is five from passing Corey Robertson's school mark...Cody Reeves needs 15 catches to pass Dade as the school's all-time leader in receptions. He also needs 12 yards to become the third Yellow Jacket with 1,000 career receiving yards...Hayden Chapman led the way with seven tackles, six solo while Jake Marcum and Jon Cazelle each had six solo tackles. Mundine had four tackles behind the line of scrimmage while Josh Holland had three.
