Denison schedule almost complete

In between signing day festivities, I checked with Denison Coach Cody White about the schedule.

The Jackets have found another non-district opponent but are still searching for one more non-district game. That final contest may be finalized in the coming days as there is a tentative deal for Denison to play Canyon at Sweetwater in a Saturday game in Week 2, pending approval by Canyon. The other options right now for that week aren't much more appealing, including Port Arthur Memorial and Abilene.

Week 0 wasn't going well either but some connections through Matt Stepp at The Old Coach sealed the opener against Kennedale, a 3A team. The search does continue, however, in case the Canyon deal falls through and White said he wouldn't be totally opposed to going out of state. An Arkansas team not too far beyond the border called and is interested but the Jackets aren't thrilled about playing by Federation rules (in Texas it is NCAA-based rules) in the away game.

In terms of 13-4A, the coaches met on Tuesday and hammered it all out. I am sad to report that Sherman-Denison will not be the final week of the regular season. They were outvoted on that after they did a blind draw to put the slate together. This will be the first time since 1995 that the two teams didn't play in the regular-season finale.

The schedule so far, in order, is:

Kennedale (site TBD)

Frisco Liberty (site TBD)

TBA

at Little Elm

District 13-4A

at Sulphur Springs

Texas High

at Royse City

OPEN WEEK

Sherman

at Greenville

Mount Pleasant

Is it possible for a team to play an independent schedule like Notre Dame does in college? Perhaps then Denison could schedule games with Pottsboro, Bells, Howe, S&S, Van Alstyne, Whitesboro, Collinsville, Tom Bean, Anna, and Sherman. I know Denison would not be able to make the playoffs playing an independent schedule but that is okay because the fans don't want to travel anyway! Besides, that schedule should give the Jackets a pretty nice record!

Curious

Schedules : 2/9/2010
Anyone heard if the Canyon game was finalized? How about locations for the Kennedale and Liberty games? We played Liberty there this year. Right now we only have 3 home games. I remember when we played Kerrville Tivy that we only had four home games. This madness has to stop.

JV schedules : 2/8/2010
Just wondering if teams in this district schedule the 9th grade and JV separately as Sherman/Denison did this last year, or if there will be 9th&JV scheduled on the same field for Thursdays? It sure will be tough if you have a 9th grader and a varsity player to travel out of town 2 nights in a row. Does anyone know if the 9th/JV schedules have been decided for Sherman and Denison?

Compared to the past two seasons, the overall record will not be as good. You don't lose that much talent all at the same time and not have a bit of the dropoff. I fully expect to see Denison in the mix for a playoff spot in 2010 and 2011 but perception around will be that the team is down if they finish say, 7-4 as opposed to 13-2 and blowing people out. I also think it will be easier because I fully expect Denison to be in an eight-team district next realignment, meaning the Jackets will need to find only three games instead of four. A lot of those teams you mentioned only had to find three games. And in most cases, those schedules are very tough.
As for planning ahead, Cody White did that. He didn't just show up withing nothing in his pocket. Before relaignment he had lined up Ennis, Frisco Liberty (If the district changed) and Little Elm. But when the announcement was made, Denison was put in a seven-team district, meaning a fourth game had to be found and then Ennis was put in a nine-team district, eliminating the game they had set up with Denison.
And to be fair, Denison has had trouble scheduling for years. Since I've been here, which includes the last three realignments, Denison has had to play Big Spring and Kerrville Tivy, and this last spot will either be Canyon (who had not made a decision as of Friday night) or another opponent.

Sherman in Week 8 : 2/7/2010
I was just wondering how most fans feel about this. I know that it's tradition to face each other last and that's great for hype and drama. For years, however, I have heard many people say that THE BIG GAME leaves the winner or loser a little flat for the first game of the playoffs. Is it better to play earlier in district? As far as the other teams not respecting our tradition, who is really surprised by that?
I don't know how many readers here follow other boards like The Old Coach. It's a little disturbing to me that they are considering naming the new 13-4A as an EAST TEXAS district. That would possibly mean even less coverage for Sherman and Denison. Even though for eons we were covered in the Dallas paper, the DMN now considers both of us to be outside the (Dallas) area. Our teams, and more importantly the players, aren't included in the weekly "area leaders." I think that's a shame, because they don't get the exposure they deserve. Many people around Dallas didn't even know who D.J. Jones was because they hadn't seen his name in the Dallas paper! Further, our games are only covered if we play someone the DMN deems to be "in the area." Sorry, it's just a major gripe of mine since they hope to sell their papers here and want us to spend our money in Big D. Thank God for the Herald Democrat and the great coverage they give us!!

Why would there be no problem in trying to find opponents at the next realignment? Do you mean because our team will be weak? My nephew who coaches at a Denton school (yes, a STRONG football program) said their tentative schedule had been set for over a year. If schools aren't afraid to play Ryan, why would they be scared of Denison? Most possible opponents know how many seniors we are losing! HP, Aledo, Stephenville, Sulphur Springs, Guyer-- all very successful programs which had no problem filling a schedule the day of realignment. It might be a good idea to plan EARLIER like many coaches do to reduce the scrambling.

Glad to see... : 2/4/2010
... that our new district mates have a little respect for tradition. Jeez! How hard would it have been to keep the Battle of the Ax as the last regular season game for these teams? I think I am going to start volunteering for the Chambers of Commerce in Prosper, Celina, Lovejoy, etc and do my part to get those towns to keep growing so those schools move up to 4A and we can get away from these... umm... fine folks. I'm already looking forward to the next realignment.

Not So Happy

Outside Texas : 2/3/2010
I think Denison is open to playing non-Texas teams as a last resort, especially under the current staff because of the offensive scheme they run. Since the rules are different outside the Lone Star State, a game with a lot of new faces on offense would probably set things back in terms of getting them ready. But if there were no options, I know Coach White wants to play a 10-game schedule. Of course something tells me by the next realignment there won't be any issues in trying to find opponents.

Back in the '50's, Denison played Durant regularly and played El Reno once. Should Cody be looking to Oklahoma in future years? Surely an Ardmore, Duncan, Durant, McAlester, Tulsa area could be possibilities. The UIL needs to address this scheduling problem in some way. 8 and 9 team districts probably don't have this problem. BTW, Marshall played two LA schools this past season no doubt for scheduling problems.
