Denison gets some love from Dave Campbell's

The annual installment of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine will officially hit stores on June 15. And since I start my vacation three days before that, I am taking a sneak peek. You just need to know where to look to get an earlier-than-scheduled glimpse of what is in store for Texoma teams, particularly Denison. It helps to check walls and marts.

The Yellow Jackets get plenty of love after a stellar year in 2008. Denison is picked as the fourth-best team in Class 4A and the favorite to win a state championship.

*Running back D.J. Jones and lineman Jaqwaylin Arps were selected as preseason all-state choices. Jones was also chosen for the magazine's Super Team offense for his performance last season.

*In Class 4A, the top 10 goes like this -- 1. Longview; 2. Denton Guyer; 3. Cibolo Steele; 4. Denison; 5. Lake Travis; 6. Everman; 7. Highland Park; 8. Waco Midway; 9. Aledo; 10. Dallas Carter.

The notable for Jacket fans is defending state champion Sulphur Springs at 17th.

Based on these projections and how the playoff qualifiers break down, Denison is predicted to capture the Division II state championship after winning Region II and then advancing to the title game and defeat Angleton. Most of the top 10 are projected to go to the big school bracket.

*Last year's eight-win improvement by Denison (4-6 to 12-1) was bettered in Class 4A only by Denton Guyer, which went from 1-9 to 12-3.

*In breaking down District 9-4A, Denison is projected to win with McKinney second, Sherman third and Frisco Liberty fourth. Jones is the preseason top offensive player while Sherman senior linebacker Garrett Powell is tabbed as the preseason defensive player of the year in the district.

The key game in 9-4A is listed as McKinney's visit to Sherman in Week 9.

There is a bit of wrong information in the Yellow Jackets' capsule. Under players to watch, former Jacket receiver Matt Logsdon is listed as one of the team's players to watch. There was a chance Logsdon would return for his senior year after transferring to Owasso (Okla.) after his sophomore year but that did not end up happening.

*Other local teams were scattered throughout their respective top 25 rankings. Celina starts at fourth in Class 3A and projected to finish as the runner-up again this season, this time in Division II to West Orange-Stark. Other notables include Prosper at 11th and Paris at 14th. Bobcat linebacker Caleb Lavey was a preseason all-state pick.

In Class 2A, Pilot Point checks in at 13th and Melissa sneaks in at No. 24. Pilot Point is projected to win Region II in Division I and offensive lineman Cam Feldt is a preseason all-state selection.

In Class 1A, Collinsville checks in at No. 22. Wolfe City defensive lineman Case Martin was chosen as a preseason all-state pick.

*In terms of recruiting info, Jones is listed as one of the top 20 running backs in the senior class, Arps was picked as a Best of the Rest for defensive ends -- putting him anywhere from 26th to 39th -- and quarterback Jordan Taylor was chosen as one of the top 10 athletes.

Among locals, Lavey was one of the top 20 linebackers and in the junior class, Callisburg's Thor Long was of the 11 quarterbacks listed in their top 100 ranking.
