Denison Spring Game Report

If you were looking for offensive excitement at the Denison spring game at Munson Stadium on Friday night, and who wouldn't after record-setting performances last season, the only fireworks you got was a 32-yard field goal by Dalton Hestand.

The Yellow Jacket offense had a quiet night and the Black Team (the defense) came away with a 43-32 victory over the White Team (the offense).

"I think they stopped themselves," Denison head coach Cody White said. "We have the pieces to be good offensively. There have been a couple of scrimmages where the offense has gotten the upper hand."

Here are some tidbits from the outing:

* The scoring was based on each unit performing certain tasks to earn points to arrive at the final score. The offense had 15 categories, the defense had 16.

* Since the two sides were split by position, rising seniors Cody Reeves, Jimmay Mundine and Jaqwaylin Arps saw significant action on both sides of the ball. This led to a confusing sequence for Arps, who played defense on the first series of the night and then switched to offense. When Mark Bolen intercepted Jordan Taylor's pass deep over the middle, Arps turned around and laid out Connor Counce, which would have been good except that was his fellow lineman on offense.

* The first-team defense, including the three two-way players, was a defensive line of Mundine, Arps, Devonte Kemp and Aaron Morrison. The linebackers were Stacy Golston, Jacob Marshall and either Jon Cazelle or Ty Carter. The secondary was Reeves and Darian Springfield at the corners with Bolen and Hayden Chapman at safety.

* The first-team offense, with Mundine at tight end, was Taylor at quarterback, Jones at running back and the receivers were Hudson Milford, Kyle Galyon and Jordan Aday. The line consisted of Corbin Boettger at center, Counce and Ben Hander at guard and then Arps and either Dillon Wedel or Garrison King at tackle. The fight between Wedel and King for the starting job may be the closest and best battle, perhaps going into the season with both pushing each other from game to game.

* The standout player on offense was rising senior Joseph Williams, who saw a majority of time at running back. He ripped off a couple of big runs and looks more than capable to be the first option behind Jones.

"He's going to get on the field in meaningful situations in the fall," White said.

Elijah and Dre Butler also had carries for the Jackets.

* Jones had three carries for 21 yards -- his first run picked up 14 yards -- but the interesting thing about Jones was his work on defense at safety, which included coming up and making a tackle on Williams. Defensive coordinator Zack Smith said that both Jones and Taylor will be in certain packages on defense.

* Taylor had a pair of turnovers -- Bolen's interception and then a first-snap fumble where Morrison recovered. Taylor, who completed one pass (his first of the night to Galyon) suffered a stinger on the play and did not return for the final four series.

* The remaining snaps went to Milford and Tylor McLaren. Milford led the best drive of the night, which was the second series of plays, getting the second-team offense into the red zone against the No. 2 defenders before a holding penalty and a sack by Josh Holland knocked them back before the field goal. On the final play of the night, Milford fell on a fumbled exchange with Jones on third down.

* The defensive line of both first and second teamers proved to be a menace at times. All three quarterbacks were under pressure at times, Kemp led a charge on third and short that resulted in a turnover on downs and there was the fumble recovery on the next series.

* To correct myself from the spring practice preview -- Jordan Watson will not be playing football, which is a shame because he looks to have the makings of a talented athlete. The rising sophomore is concentrating on basketball only.

* There were no kickoffs or punts but Hestand, a rising sophomore, did have the 32-yard field goal into a slight wind but with no defense rushing the play. He is slated to handle kicking duties while Jake Marcum or Reeves will punt.
