Basketball playoff picture

We're heading to the wire in both boys and girls basketball and with the playoffs right around the corner, here's a look at where all the local districts stand with two games remaining on the girls side and four left on the boys.

Girls

9-4A -- Sherman and Denison have been eliminated from playoff contention. Once will be happy at the end of the year, however, since the two rivals close against each other.

9-3A -- Whitesboro can clinch the third and final playoff spot with a victory over Celina on Friday night. One more Whitesboro win or a Celina loss would clinch the spot for the Lady Bearcats.

10-3A -- Bonham still has an outside shot at the third playoff spot but must win its last two -- against the two teams in front of it (Commerce and North Lamar) -- and get some help just to force a play-in game.

10-2A -- No local teams will make the playoffs. Krum, Ponder and Aubrey have all clinched postseason berths.

11-2A -- The playoff teams are set with Honey Grove, Gunter and Melissa earning the spots. But the seeding will be in doubt until the final game when Honey Grove faces Melissa. All three could end up in a first-place tie.

17-A (I) -- If you want a jumble, then this is the district for you. Sam Rayburn is above the fray at 9-1 and has clinched the district title. But after that, five of the other six teams are in the mix. Trenton sits at 6-4, Bland and Celeste are at 6-5, Blue Ridge is at 5-5 and Wolfe City is at 3-7. Expect tie-breakers to be involved on this one.

21-A (II) -- Savoy, Ector and Fannindel are in the playoffs with just the seeding to be determined. Ector and Savoy finish against each other and an outright district title could be on the line.

TAPPS 4-2A -- Texoma Christian won the district title, again, and will open the playoffs next week. If TCS wins on Friday to close out district play, it will be the 55th straight district victory for the two-time defending state champs.

Boys

9-4A -- Sherman clinched its playoff spot with a narrow victory against Liberty the last time out and can clinch its second straight district title with one more victory. Denison can earn its fourth straight playoff appearance with a win against Centennial AND a McKinney North loss to Frisco. Any combination of one Jacket win and a Bulldog loss the rest of the way puts the Jackets in.

9-3A -- Gainesville currently holds a one-game on Sanger and a two-game lead on Celina and Whitesboro for third place.

10-3A -- Anna can clinch a playoff spot with a victory over Van Alstyne on Friday.

10-2A -- Pilot Point and Callisburg both have shots to make the playoffs as the two battle Krum for the two spots in the standings behind two-time defending state champ Ponder. Callisburg and Krum square off Tuesday in a game that could seal the loser's fate.

11-2A -- Melissa remains on track to win the district title and can clinch a playoff berth with a win on Friday. The next three spots are only two games apart with Whitewright in second, Leonard in third and Bells in fourth. Bells and Leonard play Friday and a Whitewright win and a Bells loss would clinch a playoff spot for Whitewright and give Leonard a two-game lead for the third spot with three games to play.

17-A (I) -- Bland has already clinched a playoff spot and the rest of the teams are in contention, although it is not as bad as the girls side in this district. Trenton is in second, a half-game ahead of Wolfe City, and the two play on Friday. A Trenton win would clinch a berth for the Tigers. Collinsville is only a half-game behind Wolfe City and Sam Rayburn is right behind Collinsville.

21-A (II) -- Dodd City has already clinched a playoff spot with Roxton, Fannindel and Ector all battling it out. Roxton only needs one more win while Ector and Fannindel play each other on Friday.

TAPPS 4-2A -- Texoma Christian has clinched second place behind Rockwall Christian and the Eagles, last year's state runner-up, will open the playoffs on Tuesday.
