Hoop playoff spots, seeding still in doubt
The final night of girls basketball is upon us and while almost all of the playoff spots have been clinched, there are still questions about playoff seeding. On the boys side, we enter the final week (three games) of the season and things are starting to clear up considerably. Here's how things stand in the standings entering Tuesday's action:
Girls
9-4A -- Sherman and Denison have been eliminated from playoff contention.
9-3A -- Whitesboro has clinched a playoff spot and is playing Sanger for either second or third place. A loss by Whitesboro means third, a win forces a tie-breaker with the Lady Indians.
10-3A -- No local teams will make the playoffs. Paris, Commerce and North Lamar have all clinched postseason berths.
10-2A -- No local teams will make the playoffs. Krum, Ponder and Aubrey have all clinched postseason berths.
11-2A -- The playoff teams are set with Honey Grove, Gunter and Melissa earning the spots. Honey Grove faces Melissa tonight and if Melissa wins and Gunter wins its game against Howe, then there is a three-way tie for first place. If Honey Grove and Gunter both win, Honey Grove takes the district title, Gunter is second and Melissa is third.
17-A (I) -- The jumble still exists in this competitive loop. Sam Rayburn is the district champion. Trenton faces Sam Rayburn and will clinch second place with a victory. The other match-ups are Blue Ridge and Wolfe City and Collinsville against Bland. Both BR and Bland are 6-5 and Celeste is sitting at 6-6, done for the season. I still see a tie-breaker involved.
21-A (II) -- Savoy, Ector and Fannindel are in the playoffs with just the seeding to be determined. Ector and Savoy finish against each other and a Savoy win clinches the district title. Fannindel is locked into third place.
Boys
9-4A -- Sherman and Denison have clinched playoff spots Sherman can clinch the district title with a win over Denison on Tuesday. Denison's playoff seed will probably be in doubt until the last game because the Jackets are tied with Frisco for second and are two games ahead of Centennial.
9-3A -- Gainesville currently holds a one-game lead on Sanger and Whitesboro for third place. Sanger and Whitesboro square off Tuesday in what amounts to an elimination game.
10-3A -- Anna has clinched a playoff berth while Van Alstyne is one game behind Commerce for third place. VA travels to Commerce in what is an elimination game if the Panthers lose.
10-2A -- Pilot Point and Callisburg are on the verge of clinching playoff spots. Pilot Point can do so with a victory over Valley View while Callisburg can do the same with a victory over Krum.
11-2A -- Melissa and Whitewright have clinched playoff spots and Melissa needs just one more win to earn the district's top seed. Leonard needs one victory and a Bells loss to clinch third place but the schedule could make that come down to the last game before the Tigers officially get in.
17-A (I) -- Bland has already clinched a playoff spot and Trenton needs just one more victory to earn its berth. Collinsville is at 6-4, Wolfe City is at 5-4 and Sam Rayburn is at 5-5. Bland faces Collinsville and Sam Rayburn has Trenton on Tuesday night.
21-A (II) -- Dodd City and Ector have clinched playoff spots and Roxton has the district's other spot locked up. Dodd City can wrap up the top seed with a win against Roxton on Tuesday.
