What happened to Thanksgiving?
November 18, 2008 As I've mentioned before, what happened to Thanksgiving?
Truly, this year, the one quintessential American holiday was
absorbed into election mania and the forboding economic crisis. By
this, I mean it seems Christmas has all but swallowed up one of my
favorite holidays. Of course, America is counting on this Christmas
season to be a "savior" for the poor economy. But, if everyone is
suffering, who's going to do all the buying they're counting on to
"bail" us out?
I say, let nature and economics take its course. In the mean time,
as the quote from the movie "The Shawshank Redemption" goes, you either
get busy living, or get busy dying.
So, bring on the turkey and dressing, the communion with family
around the table, the celebration of the very essence of Americana. And
maybe, just maybe, we can have some semblance of normalcy and if we
squint real hard, we'll see holidays of the past come to light. If
nothing else, do it for the kids.
